Gran Turismo 4 loses online play

PS2 News | Polyphony Digital's racer still on course for worldwide December release, but at cost of online play.
Sony representatives have today confirmed that Gran Turismo fans will have to wait a little longer before getting the chance to play the series online. Speaking at a Tokyo Game Show press conference earlier today, a Sony spokesman confirmed that the online mode of the forthcoming Gran Turismo 4 has been dropped indefinitely, though announced that a version with online play would be released at some stage in 2005.

There's a small silver lining to this particular cloud however, with the sacrifice of online play meaning the game is set to make it's December release date. Thus, Japanese gamers will be seeing Gran Turismo 4 on 3rd December, whilst the US and Europe won't be far behind, receiving the title on 14th and 17th December respectively. No date for other PAL regions has been set, though December is almost a certainty.

Dropping online play is a drastic move for developer Polyphony Digital, though with Christmas looming it seems Sony - who are publishing the title - have decided that losing one of the PlayStation 2's biggest names this Christmas could well be too costly. And when online play does become a reality next year with the newly announced online version, PALGN expects the game to be released at a budget price, much like this year's Gran Turismo Concept.

Well if I actually owned a PS2 I'd rather wait and have online play, rather than having to wait for a budget release. Online would just add so much replayability for such a big name title.
