Square-Enix announces new Final Fantasy VII Spin-Off

PS2 News | Yet another title to feed off the glory of the already spectacular Final Fantasy VII.
Square-Enix has confirmed today that they plan to release yet another Final Fantasy VII spin-off, making it Square-Enix’s third spin-off of the legendary Final Fantasy VII title – with Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children already announced. The latest issue of Japanese magazine ‘Shonen Jump’ contains the first information on the game starring Final Fantasy VII's nocturnal character Vincent Valentine. The game, currently known as Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus, will hit the PS2 exclusively next year.

The game will allow gamers to take control of Vincent Valentine, the ex-Turks gunman. Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus is set to take place a year following the events of Advent Children, meaning Dirge of Cerberus will follow the events of Final Fantasy VII a three years after. The story will involve a mysterious group called the DGs who suddenly begin attacking peaceful towns and cities in the world, leaving Vincent to take the role of the hero and seek revenge.

Little else has been revealed apart from a few cinematic screenshots that leave the mind anticipating at the possibilities of the game’s genre, which Square-Enix has currently listed as "undetermined" – which also suggest the game is still in early stages of it’s development.

Final Fantasy: Dirge of Cerberus is scheduled for a 2005 Japanese release, with no U.S or PAL release announced thus far. It’s also quite possible that Square-Enix are preparing to unleash the first footage of the game at the upcoming Tokyo Game Show, scheduled to begin on the 24th of September. Naturally, PALGN will keep you update-to-date with all relevant information as it comes available.

That was a mistake on my behalf, bad translation of the scan, which we can't show due to copyright.

All details concerning the story, characters and timeline will be confirmed within the next couple of weeks or even months. So be sure to stick around for that. I'm going to see if I'll be able to contact Square-Enix within the next couple of days and see what I can get out of that.

Judging from the artwork it seems like it is going to be Devil May Cry with Vincent. I hope it is something as radically different regardless, I already have grown tired of the FF series gameplay. If it is another RPG I hope it keeps the system similar to the original, just with enough modifications to make it seem less rehashed.
