New Tomb Raider to be unveiled this autumn

PS2 News | New look Lara to appear soon, with release pencilled in for 'before next June'.
The seventh and latest entry in the Tomb Raider franchise is set to be revealed in the next two months, with Eidos also informing the City that the title would be ready for release 'in the fourth quarter of the current financial year' (which ends in June). The game is being put together at Crystal Dynamics (who recently acquired Lara Croft's creator Toby Gard to overlook the project), the first time a title from the franchise has been developed outside Core Design.

The fact that the title's development has moved from Core Design is encouraging, and PALGN has been reliably informed that there's no more of the sluggish movement that's afflicted recent Tomb Raider games, with the 'turning circle' that Lara previously suffered from now eliminated. Which sounds like some significant lessons may have been learnt in the period since the appalling Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness, not least from titles such as Ubisoft's sublime Prince of Persia and the Toby Gard-developed Galleon. Meanwhile, insider sources have claimed that the version they had seen was 'a lot more responsive and closer to the series' original ideology than previous sequels'.

PALGN isn't convinced just yet, but looks forward to being pleasantly surprised. More as it becomes available.

Don't they know when to quit? I lost interest at number 4, like with most games. After that it gets rediculous..

Well I may have lost interest, but I still hope that one day they give the series what it deserves, analog control. I reckon there could be a good game made yet.

the best thing about tomb raider was making her dive onto solid rock... her body used to make a great thudding sound...

At least they have the original creator back, that's usually a good sign. I'm not a big fan of Crystal Dynamics (Ever since they didn't hire me), so it may be a battle for mediocrity.

I remember playing the first TR and just remembering the sense of wonder looking around the environments, effectively the game was so mind-blowing, the concept could have easily been exploited by Lucasarts for Indiana Jones but they left it too late. As it was we got his feminine counterpart and a lot of fun and frustration working out those dratted block puzzles etc etc. I felt that the whole emphasis on her chest was pretty wrong, as cartoonists use exaggeration all the time to emphasize the manly or womanly nature of a character. Any male hero in games is generally always built like Arnold anyway so what was the big deal? Ahh..let's hope the new game can get back to restoring the sense of surprise, wonder and if they increase the other things...fanboys will buy it anyway. I currently have TRAOD as a doorstop.
