Midway today announced development of LA Rush - the fourth title in the series, after three on the N64 - was underway. However, the series has moved away from its native Nintendo format to the PlayStation 2 and Xbox consoles.
From the early details given, the game seems like a paint-by-numbers, Need for Speed: Underground-style affair. Players will compete in 'extreme street racing', exploring various streets of Los Angeles at the same time.
A story mode is also promised, where racers around the country will gather in Los Angeles to gain 'respect' - presumably gained by having the most ridiculous carbon fibre wing on the back of your 'sick ride'. Assisting in the creative design of the game will be the crew from Rides Magazine, and the boys from the abortion of a TV show, Pimp My Ride, West Coast Customs (who are actually quite talented, despite appearing on the typical bull**** that MTV try to pass off as entertainment).
The first three Rush games were all about high flying jumps and short cuts. Thankfully, LA Rush hopes to maintain some of that formula with plenty of gravity-defying jumps, police chases and shortcut hi-jinks on your way to victory.
The game is set to feature over fifty cars, including concept cars - some from West Coast Customs - as well as a range of licensed car upgrades. Expect celebrities to provide voices, and some big name music to be announced in early 2005.
