PS2 and Xbox prices slashed in Europe

PS2 News | Sony and Microsoft gear up for the Christmas battle.
European gamers were today given a boost with the happy tidings that Sony and Microsoft would both be reducing the prices of their respective home consoles. In a press release dispatched this morning, Sony declared that, from today onwards, they'd be slashing the cost of a new PlayStation 2 to the rather peculiar (but very welcome) price of £104.99. 'Hurrah!' we said. Regrettably, the price cut is only effective in the UK. 'Boo!' we said. Though thinking about it, PALGN would bank on a European price reduction nearer Christmas. 'Hurrah!' we said again. And so on.

A few hours later, just as the giddy grins were slowly fading from our faces, Microsoft danced to Sony's tune and released news of their own price cuts for the Xbox. Thus, from Friday 27th August, the Xbox will be available to European consumers for a paltry £99.99/€149.99 (that's just over 250 $AU). Nintendo have not said a word meanwhile, though Sony and Microsoft's largesse still hasn't been able to match the Gamecube's tidy £79.99 price tag.

The price cuts are clearly aimed at boosting Christmas sales and are a clear indication that, despite the promise of next-generation hardware being unveiled early in 2005, hardware manufacturers are still confident there's juice in the current flock of consoles. Now all we need is an Australian price cut, and PAL gamers everywhere can look forward to a fairly glorious Christmas.
