Vivendi Universal have today announced plans for a game adaption of the classic gangsta flick, Scarface, despite the fact that GTA: Vice City did this job rather well.
Scarface, the movie, was released in 1983. It featured a seedy Cuban refugee, Tony Montano - played absolutely brilliantly by Al Pacino - on his rise from low life runt, to top crime lord.
At this stage, very little is known about the title. Given the movie's origins, and the fact that it's scheduled to be a third person action/shooter, expect something quite similar to GTA: Vice City. Screenwriter David McKenna has written the game's original script, leaving us a bit puzzled as to exactly how the game will tie into the movie. Locations though still look similar to that of the movie, with 1980's Miami the main location, while the Bahamas will also be visited.
"The treacherous world of Scarface is a natural property to translate into a cinematic game play experience," claimed Michael Pole, Executive Vice President, Worldwide Studios for Vivendi Universal Games. "The game will feature cutting-edge technology, a compelling storyline and the unprecedented experience of playing as one of Hollywood's most notorious gangsters, Tony Montana." Too bad Rockstar got there first.
"Scarface was a landmark film and has inspired countless movies and games," stated Bill Kispert, vice president of Interactive at Universal Studios Consumer Products Group, obviously referring to Vice City, among others. "Having the chance to now bring gamers the authentic experience is an opportunity and challenge we are looking forward to."
The game is still a fair way off though, scheduled for a release late next year. PALGN will keep you up to date with more news when it's available.
