Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal Preview

PS2 Preview | Ratchet and Clank are back and are joined by new friends, foes and challenges.
Ratchet and Clank have managed to establish themselves as a great duo in crime-fighting on the Playstation 2. This was a franchise which begun less than two years on the Playstation 2 and is already up to its third incarnation. When a third game is being released after less than three years you know the title is bound to be at least something decent. Ratchet and Clank is no exception. With the third Ratchet and Clank title promising new features and online play will this be a game to get around Christmas time or a huge disappointment?

The story in Ratchet and Clank has been well developed and is incredibly comprehensive. After word spreads of Ratchet and Clank's recent conquest in Ratchet & Clank: Locked and Loaded, Clank finds himself recognized as an interstellar robot of mystery and intrigue after starring in his own television series, Secret Agent Clank. While Ratchet is dismayed by his new sidekick status, the feelings are put aside when the twosome is called together by the Galactic President to bring peace to the universe. They find themselves traveling back to Planet Veldin to battle Dr. Nefarious, a robotic supervillain who has devised a diabolical scheme to wipe out all organic life in the galaxy. To reach his goal, he has instructed the Tyhrranoids, a race of multi-eye aliens to annihilate the organics, not knowing that if the Tyhrranoids are successful, they will end up causing their own extinction.

To take on a more dangerous mission fifteen new weapons will be available to reek destruction on Planet Veldin. There are up to four levels of upgrades for most weapons. Players are able to team up with a third player to help reach their goals, the famous Captain Owark who previously only made cameo’s in the first two Ratchet and Clank titles will be fully playable in Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal.

Players will have full access to all new vehicles like the Turbo slider or hovership, to compete in races and combat enemies in intense battlefield missions. In a first for the series, if players use a memory card save from Ratchet and Clank: Locked and Loaded they will be able to obtain a few favourite weapons for free.

As mentioned earlier online play is included in Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal. Up to eight players will be able to take part in battle with six additional levels exclusive for online play. Developer Insomniac have promised that Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal will be more frantic and challenging than its predecessors.

PALGN will have more information on Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal as it is released. Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal will be available Quarter 4, 2004 for the Playstation 2.
Overall:
More of the same or an evolution in platformers? In only a few months we'll know. So far Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal is looking like a brilliant game, but will it get lost with all the other christmas titles being released? We'll have to wait and see.
