Need For Speed: Underground 2 Preview

PS2 Preview | We take a look at Need For Speed Underground 2, The sequel to one of the best selling titles of last year.
The sequel to the best-selling game of 2003 is going to sell no matter what. Need For Speed: Underground 2 will be released in Quarter 4, 2004 for the Playstation 2, Xbox, Gamecube and Gameboy Advance. Although Need For Speed: Underground was a great title, it was far from perfect. With much more competition in the racing stakes this year (Juiced & Burnout 3) EA won’t want to be beaten at their own game. To counter this competition, EA have gone back to the drawing board to refine the Need For Speed series, with the hopes that Need For Speed: Underground 2 will become the best selling game of 2004. So how is it looking?

The first Undeground was a linear game with 116 missions. After these missions were completed, the game was essentially over, meaning the missions - although great - quickly became short-lived. EA have revamped Need For Speed: Underground 2 so that the city is entirely free-roaming. A massive city is divided into five interconnected neighborhoods, ranging from suburban hills to an intense downtown grid. Each of the five cities will look uniquely different, including different weather, road surfaces and environmental hazards. As far as PALGN could tell, races will still all take place at night.

A series of fully drivable freeways will connect the neighbourhoods together. This means Need For Speed: Underground 2 is sounding more like Midnight Club II in that the player can choose their route and when they race, and rather than being forced to race they can just drive around, honing their skills if they prefer.

Races can be randomly generated and can happen anywhere, at any time and as players encounter rivals on the street they’ll be informed where the hottest upgrades can be purchased, this should ensure that the game is never the same. EA are also promising three new as yet unannounced gameplay modes to complement the circuit, drift and drag competitions.

One of the most addictive features of Need For Speed: Underground was the ability to tune and upgrade your car. This aspect of the title has been fully upgraded, and hundreds of licensed aftermarket performance upgrades will be available to purchase. The amount of cars in the title has also been upgraded with more than thirty of the most popular tuner cars available to drive with, ranging from Mitsubishi cars to Volkswagens.

Visual customisation is back in force with more than twice the visual customizations of last year’s game, billions of possible car combinations will be available to gamers ranging from audio upgrades, wide body kits, neon and more.

Need For Speed: Underground 2 will be fully playable online for the Playstation 2 and the Xbox. And just like last years version of the title, reputation will play a big part in the online experience.

EA appear to have upgraded every part of Need For Speed: Underground 2. They have listened to the complaints of gamers and made their own refinements to the title. So is Need For Speed: Underground 2 looking like a contender for the best title of 2004? You bet it is.

PALGN will have more information on Need For Speed: Underground 2 as soon as it becomes available.
Overall:
Need For Speed: Underground 2 is sounding brilliant. EA traditionally deliver standard yearly updates but they seem to be going all out for this title.

Definately looking forward to it. icon_smile.gif

I hope EA adds replays to races this time around. It sucks that you have cool looking cars, but can't view them racing around the tracks. icon_confused.gif

I'm also looking forward to it and like Civ I want to see replays in the game.

NFSU didn't have 116 events, it only had 112. Unless the PC version had an extra 4?

Oh and one of the guys working on NFSU 2 confirmed that the races will still only take place at night but we will see dusk and dawn racing. icon_smile.gif
It's not that far off so can't wait. *crosses off another day off the calendar.

Actually there were 116 because they were "bonuses" so it came to 116 missions in the end.

NFSU games are nothing compared to Sega GT Online in my opinion... Especcially in graphics.

Let''s not start with the comparisons to others just yet..

You can't compare them. 1 is a sim-like racer while the other is pure arcade. icon_shifty.gif
Same applies to the graphics.

It's looking very nice. The wwather effects should be awesome. Combinations of different levels of rain and also wind...

It's looking good, but they NEED to take out three things as I have seen in most of the videos - the Front Light effects, the Neon reflection, and the back light Effect when using Nos. They all look horrible. If they're planning on changing that, or if that is just for testing and whatnot, than I suggest they take them out now. They look...hoorid. The front light looks like a sprite (an image), the Neon is a bright Line created in MSpaint, and the back light NOS effect makes it look like a darn rocket.

Putting that all besides, I think the game looks very, VERY promising so far. The general lighting (most of the time a matrix-y green tint) looks good, the new cars will hopefully be interesting (an escalade...ha!), the new modes of racing should be good (whatever they might be) and the huge span of track is just impressive.

I'm sure the tail-light trails are in early form as they do look a bit odd. I guess EA have been watching Anime car chases...
I'm also hoping EA fix the framerate.
