The first Undeground was a linear game with 116 missions. After these missions were completed, the game was essentially over, meaning the missions - although great - quickly became short-lived. EA have revamped Need For Speed: Underground 2 so that the city is entirely free-roaming. A massive city is divided into five interconnected neighborhoods, ranging from suburban hills to an intense downtown grid. Each of the five cities will look uniquely different, including different weather, road surfaces and environmental hazards. As far as PALGN could tell, races will still all take place at night.
A series of fully drivable freeways will connect the neighbourhoods together. This means Need For Speed: Underground 2 is sounding more like Midnight Club II in that the player can choose their route and when they race, and rather than being forced to race they can just drive around, honing their skills if they prefer.
Races can be randomly generated and can happen anywhere, at any time and as players encounter rivals on the street they’ll be informed where the hottest upgrades can be purchased, this should ensure that the game is never the same. EA are also promising three new as yet unannounced gameplay modes to complement the circuit, drift and drag competitions.
One of the most addictive features of Need For Speed: Underground was the ability to tune and upgrade your car. This aspect of the title has been fully upgraded, and hundreds of licensed aftermarket performance upgrades will be available to purchase. The amount of cars in the title has also been upgraded with more than thirty of the most popular tuner cars available to drive with, ranging from Mitsubishi cars to Volkswagens.
Visual customisation is back in force with more than twice the visual customizations of last year’s game, billions of possible car combinations will be available to gamers ranging from audio upgrades, wide body kits, neon and more.
Need For Speed: Underground 2 will be fully playable online for the Playstation 2 and the Xbox. And just like last years version of the title, reputation will play a big part in the online experience.
EA appear to have upgraded every part of Need For Speed: Underground 2. They have listened to the complaints of gamers and made their own refinements to the title. So is Need For Speed: Underground 2 looking like a contender for the best title of 2004? You bet it is.
PALGN will have more information on Need For Speed: Underground 2 as soon as it becomes available.
