Singstar Preview

PS2 Preview | Studio London seem to have done it again.
After the astounding success of the Eyetoy last year Studio London is making another attempt at invading your living room. The Eyetoy was a USB based camera which sensed the movements of players and incorporated them into the game. Non gamers everywhere soon found themselves immersed in the title.

Singstar is the latest invention from the creators of the Eyetoy and looks to be just as addictive. Containing two microphones and a stellar list of songs the Singstar pack will turn the Playstation 2 into a karaoke machine.

Technology is incorporated into the microphone (that plugs easily into the Playstation 2 USB port) which tracks the pitch, tone and rhythm of the player and gives a score at the end of the round. Original recordings and original videos are provided and Singstar allows you to record your performance and save it to memory card.

Singstar also works in collaboration with the Eyetoy. If you have an Eyetoy plugged in then your face will replace the video clips allowing for an all new level of interactivity.

There are four modes in Singstar, The main mode is titled Star Maker mode and is similar in vein to Australian Idol. Gamers will be taken from a trailer park to a star if they sing correctly.

There are thirty licensed songs and if Singstar is as well received as the Eyetoy then we can see many more being added to that list as expansion packs. The full track listing is listed below and it is a stellar list.

  • Liberty X: Just a Little
  • Mis-Teeq: Scandalous
  • The Darkness: I Believe in a Thing Called Love
  • A-Ha: Take On Me
  • Pink: Get the Party Started
  • Jamelia: Superstar
  • Motorhead: Ace of Spades
  • George Michael: Careless Whisper
  • Avril Lavigne: Complicated
  • Petula Clark: Downtown
  • Sophie Ellis Bextor: Murder on the Dancefloor
  • Daniel Bedingfield:If You're Not the One
  • Carl Douglas: Everybody Was Kung Fu Fighting
  • Rick Astley: Never Gonna Give You Up
  • Westlife: World of Our Own
  • Ricky Martin: Livin La Vida Loca
  • Lemar: 50:50
  • Madonna: Like a Virgin
  • Roy Orbison: Pretty Woman
  • S Club: Don't Stop Movin'
  • Deee-Lite: Groove is in the Heart
  • Sugababes: Round Round
  • Elvis: Suspicious Minds
  • Busted: Crashed the Wedding
  • Village People: YMCA
  • Good Charlotte: Girls and Boys
  • Blondie: Heart of Glass
  • Dido: Thank You
  • Atomic Kitten: Eternal Flame
  • Blue: One Love

Singstar will be released May 21st 2004 and we think it is going to be an impressive game. The music caters to people of all music tastes and two microphones plus a game certainly makes for great value.
Overall:
Singstar is looking extremely promising. With two microphones plus a game with fully licensed songs included for $99.95 Singstar is also tremendously good value.

Very addictive. I rate it 8/10

My only gripes are:-
The game has some issues with recognizing lower toned voices and, not telling you what part you're are singing within a group. Which sometimes changes from Lead to backup singer role with no indication.

And the tone bar is not always accurate either. Indicating you have to sing higher or lower than you actually need to sing.

The highligh bar at the bottom doesn't always offer a lead-in either, sometimes there's nothing then suddenly the first word is highlighted and by then you've missed it.

Lastly you have to pro-nun-ci-ate ev-er-y sy-lla-bull which is not what the original artisit is doing. This goes for timing aswell. Also you can't add vibrato or for that matter sing exactly as the original artist is.

But overall it's up there as the most fun game/series Sony has brought out in ages.

And this from someone who is very shy normally. I have very little problem belting out the tunes knowing full well the neighbours can hear atleast some of it. And the dogs too. lol
