Mortal Kombat: Deception Preview

PS2 Preview | Mortal Kombat will return, with more blood than ever. Oh, and online capabilities.
After the success that was Deadly Alliance, it was almost inevitable that the Mortal Kombat franchise was going to live on. The 6th instalment into the controversial series will go by the title of Mortal Kombat: Deception and is expected to be a major expansion on the critically acclaimed Deadly Alliance.

Deception will feature 24 characters, 8 which are new, 6 that are returning from Deadly Alliance and 10 of the Mortal Kombat classics. Each character will have two unique fatalities, which are said to be more gruesome than anything ever seen in the series. Also, the fighting stages will have there own ‘stage fatalities’. More interestingly though, Deception will allow fighters to commit suicide before giving the opponent the satisfaction of a fatality. This can be done by a pressing a certain button combination.

The environments in Deception will have a lot more depth to them. Not only will they look as evil as ever, but they will feature multiple layers. Similar to what can be seen in the Dead or Alive games, you’ll be able to throw your opponent through walls or perhaps, depending on the level, throw them into a deathtrap full of fire and hot coals.

Deception will introduce three new game modes: Konquest, Puzzle Kombat and MK Chess. Konquest is where the majority of the story will be told. It will play out like an RPG, the character will begin as a teenager and will age as you play. The mode will be time based, and will require you to be at a certain place at a certain time to meet up with a specific character. The coolest part of this mode is the ability to make the character your own, by earning items to wear. On the entire completion of this mode, you can take your character online.

The MK Chess game is basically what the title suggests. You’ll have a chess board with Mortal Kombat characters which are used to fight other characters to take their square. Apparently, there will be a large amount of strategy required in this mode. The other game mode, Puzzle Kombat is a puzzle fighter type game with a Mortal Kombat twist. It has been said that fatalities will play a role in this game.

As I mentioned a couple paragraphs above, Deception will be online. Not only does this include the fighting portion of the game, but you’ll be able to battle your friends in MK Chess and Puzzle Kombat as well.

Mortal Kombat: Deception will be released on all three major consoles later in the year. Of course, only the PS2 and Xbox versions will be online. PALGN will have more coverage on the title as it is revealed.
Overall:
Mortal Kombat: Deception is looking as if it could be the fighting game of 2004. After being surprised with the fact that Deadly Alliance actually turned out good, I have high hopes for Deception. Hopefully, Midway can pull it off again.

this is good news as far as i am concerned, i was a huge fan of this series in high school, but thought MK4 sucked... i skipped deadly alliance for a long time since i didn't think it'd be good, but i bought it when it was $15 at Kmart figuring it'd be a weekends worth of laughing, but i actually think it is pretty good, funnily, i think it's the cartoony-ness of some of the fatalities that spoil it...

and the fat bastard... he's ****...

I figured they'd do something online, i mean its the perfect oppurtunity. I have to say that the chess idea sounds awful, but the puzzle fighter thing sounds good. There are too many games at the moment doing this "Growing up" thing, THUG, Def Jam Vendetta, NBA Street to mention a few, and eeven though its a good method of story, its getting old but its still a good mode i guess. I think i'll buy this game, but not at the full price! icon_razz.gif

Nothing will beat MK1 or MK2 icon_razz.gif

MK3 was ok and the MK Trilogy was pretty good but from there on I have found them really bad.

I hope this will end up good.
