Call of Duty 4 match results in arrest

PC News | 19 year old college student suggested 'shooting up the school'.
The Cumberland Times News reports that a 19-year-old male, Allieu Shaw, has been arrested as a result of statements made during an online match of Call of Duty 4 via Xbox Live.

The Frostburg State University student apparently spoke about 'shooting up the school', and 'how he was going to do it' via voice chat. A fellow online gamer called the Frostburg Police Department and, in collaboration with Shaw's internet service provider and Microsoft, the police tracked Shaw's IP to his room at the college.

Court documents indicate that Shaw says 'he was joking and had no intention of following through with the threats'. A search of his room yielded no evidence of the threat being acted on.

Shaw faces a maximum penalty of a year in jail and/or a $5,000USD fine.

If I had a dollar for every time I heard a kid say he wanted to map his school for Counter Strike just to shoot it up........

People say all kind of dumb stuff online, I bet the guy who called the cops was Jack Thompson xD

But if he was going to go through with it, and they hadn't taken it seriously, then what would have happened then?

I don't think it's much of an injustice personally.

Anyone who spouts that kind of crap online is an idiot anyway. It happens all the time in Halo 3. This guy just happened to be an unfortunate idiot.

I don't. I'm not disputing he is an idiot, but you don't punish something like this with jail.

The response to this is way over the top, I know the United States is on edge with a number of shootings this year but they can't just make an example out of every person who comes along spewing out some trash talk.

Talking or even thinking about 'shooting up the school' will cost me upwards of $US 5,000 or a year in jail/gaol, got it

Definately shows you gotta be careful with what you say online
Although it does seem a bit harsh of a reaction to a comment such as that, he was just probably trying to 'show off' or seem 'cool' to the other Xbox Live(rs), it happens a lot
Think of the Spy Kids 3 'Game Over' beta testers...
They were cool in-game, but outside, not so much

I love how Americans try to solve problems with a knee jerk reaction. Sure, lets put everyone in prison who talks about shooting, but lets keep guns readily available to all our citizens. Way to go, you wacky yanks.

I've always wanted to map out an exact copy of my town in a gta game, it would be great fun and i could finally settle that argument with a mate we've had for years;my old rolla would clear the railway overpass EASY if i just took that rain gutter beforehand at the right angle and my speed was right....

Umm.Yeah.I can understand actually their point.Never, ever mention schools and shooting in the same sentence, this is the year 2007 guys.Hell, i woulnd't even advise using those two words while at a school FOR shooting.

I agree, its not like while playing, you will talk about plans on how to do a school shooting to a complete stranger.

Some people treat online gaming as gaming with their closest mates and sometimes are not careful with what they say. They get too comfortable.

Yeah well. One part hangover from the days when local militias were a necessity, one part 'well if someone shoots at me I need to be able to shoot back!' mentality.

For the topic at hand: that maximum sentence is absurd! I'd like to think that they'll just wave it infront of the guy to 'scare him straight', but when you're talking about the US [i]anything[/] is possible.

'You couldn’t be more wrong, Lisa. If I didn’t have this gun, the king of England could just walk in here anytime he wants and start shoving you around. Do you want that?'
