Unreal Tournament III PC demo available

PC News | Patch also released.
A demo for the PC version of Unreal Tournament III has been released. Coming in at a sizable 741 MB, it is available for download here.

A patch for the demo is also available here.

'We created a fix for the game not starting up on Windows XP 64 and Windows Server 2003 systems. This patch has not undergone the same amount of QA as the released demo so I strongly encourage to ONLY replace the UT3Demo.exe with the one from the patch if you are experiencing the "Modified executable code is not allowed" issue at startup,' the forum post states.

'I would think most...would actually be able to get a great experience with Unreal Tournament III. We spent a considerable amount of time and effort making sure that gamers will be able to enjoy UTIII even with older gaming rigs,' Epic Vice President Mark Rein said in an interview with CVG.

'The reason we put out a beta version of our demo was to get feedback on how well the game runs on older hardware...it should also be noted that we purposely left out some of the higher detail content in the beta demo levels to keep the download size reasonable and because...it is generally already known the game runs well on high-end hardware and we didn't think an over-2GB beta would get downloaded and tested as much as we'd like to see,' Rein added.

The Unreal Tournament III demo includes three mixed Deathmatch and Vehicle Capture the Flag maps, and can be played locally against AI, or online against real competitors.

Been playing it way too much over the days.

Huge change from UT2004 in that it's much more up close and personal. 2K4 was a lot about being defensive while this basically does the opposite. Hitscan weapons have been nerfed a large amount too so it's no longer long range dominance with some of the high tier players who prefer the hitscan weaponry.

Visuals are also fantastic but you can clearly see the demo has been dumbed down, as changing the texture levels from 3 to 5 poses no changes whatsoever.

All in all it's a welcome addition to the UT franchise and it's no more pussy-arse defensive s**t that 2k4 put up. In your face and downright personal carnage icon_wink.gif

I had a good play of the demo last night and I have to say it's quite good. It's not fundamentally different to UT2004, and the weapons haven't really changed (despite a little reworking), but the game takes on a very futuristic look and feel with all the weapons looking very technological and advanced (despite having similar function to that of UT2004). The AVRIL has a particularly nice upgrade imo, the ability to lock on to far away vehicles via laser sight. The included levels are very good and provide plenty of cover and strategic points for your battles. It's a shame that there's only 3 levels though, 1 of which can only be accessed through Vehicle Capture the Flag. The Heatray level is particularly interesting as it introduces a giant, walking, heat-ray shooting mech. It's player controllable and extremely powerful, but has a very slow movement speed.

All in all, if you liked UT2004, then you'll probably love UT3 since the two are so similar. If you're a fan of online FPS's, give it a look.

Enable Console (~)

type the following

summon utgamecontent.utvehicle_darkwalker_content
summon utgamecontent.utvehicle_cicada_content
summon utgamecontent.utvehicle_fury_content
summon utgamecontent.utvehicle_paladin
summon utgamecontent.utvehicle_nemesis

This will summon hidden vehicles that do not appear in the demo levels.

Type 'loaded' in the console on any level to receive all weapons, including a Redeemer with infinite missiles, great fun with a tonne of bots!
