Orange Box available for pre-order

PC News | Now with extra Peggle!
Valve's Orange Box, consisting of Half-Life 2, Episode 1, Episode 2, Team Fortress 2 and Portal is now available for pre-order on Steam with a 10% discount. The whole lot, after the discount, will set you back roughly AU$54.

Not only do you get the games cheaper if you pre-order, but you'll also get to play the Team Fortress 2 beta from Monday September 17th and get a special Half-Life 2 themed version of Peggle Extreme. Which is nice.

The Orange Box is due for release on October 10th, 2007.

I'm sold, why bother buying retail!

You get it cheaper, with 10% off, a beta and a free game if you buy online icon_biggrin.gif

Just finished purchasing it. Best thing i've ever done, $129 separate or $45 including the beta and free game. Just had a play of it and its pretty funny to see a unicorn getting eaten by a headcrab lol. Plus i think its a great idea what they are doing with the Gift Idea. If someone has already purchased HL2 or Episode 1 they are able to use the copy of HL2 and Episode 1 that they get with the Orange Box and give it to a friend to play.

Hmm.. no Black Box pre-order option? icon_cry.gif

Peggle! Count me in. No seriously. One of the best 'casual' games ever.

It's amazing to see just how well Steam have turned things around from their early days.

Steam is the best.

The only problem i have is not being able to combine games i bought at retail and steam purchased expansion packs.

Im thinking about buying this pack - but Team Fortress 2 is the only game I'm interested in and everyone will be so good at FPSs that Im not sure ill bother.

Is this just the PC price? I am interested in grabbing this on the PS3.

I've just bought it, an I'm playing Peggle right now.

Having never even heard of Peggle before, its great fun and pretty funny also. Can't wait for the TF2 Beta and of course the actual release.

just finished Peggle - pity it's pretty much only a demo.

so now i have an extra HL2 and HL2E1 licence. =/

EDIT: ah sweet - i'll be able to giveaway those licences when Orange Box launches. pretty clever marketing ploy really - get people to giveaway HL2/E1 to someone who hasn't played them - get them hooked so they buy Orange Box and have to giveaway their excess licences - snowballing.

please don't PM me about the extra licences - i can't do anything with them until Orange Box is released in October.
i'll probably start some thread to act as a repository for excess licences, so those people with friends with taste (ie: they've all already got HL2/E1) or without friends can give them away here, or something.

Steam only price.

Looking at $100 + for PS3 in November some time.

Should be pre-ordering soon, can't wait to play TF2, and still need to get HL2:EP1 so it works out really well price wise for me.

Where's my BLACK box!!? icon_sad.gif

Pardon my ignorance, but what's the difference between the Orange Box and the Black Box?

Black was cancelled a few months ago.

It contained only the new games Ep2, TF2 and Portal, while orange has HL2 and Ep1.

I thought Black was still coming to Steam, just not retail?.. icon_cry.gif

Nope. Although im sure somewhere down the track you will be able to buy them seperately on Steam.

So wait there will be no way to purchase Episode 2 without buying games I already own? That's weak! You'd think they'd at least offer the game via Steam!

I got my BlackBox Voucher from ATI.

Works, & preloading TF2 now.

No Peggle though. Oh wells.

There is, you can buy it separately for US $30.

at the moment: correct - though it really only hurts people who ONLY want E2 - ie: no TF2, no Portal.

there is a price on steam for the titles individually, which is $30 for E2, and $20 each for Portal and TF2, so if you want one of those extra games (ie: Portal), the Orange Box is currently $5 cheaper than the rrp of those two titles.

and you get 2 titles you already own.

EDIT:
prices are actually:
E2 = $30USD
TF2 = $30USD
Portal = $20USD

Hardly. I'm rather irked that I need to buy Half-Life 2 and Episode 1 again, and even if I can give away the licenses, I don't know anyone who hasn't got the game or wants the game. Really looking out for their previous customers.

By the way, do these licenses have expiry dates like those game invite things?

EDIT: Only topping off when I pre-ordered Episode 1 through Steam, and was charged twice on my credit card. Steam support was useless, as always.

eh?

i got charged twice when i bought E1 too, but i sent them an email and got it refunded within 48 hours.

and thanks to shifting dollar values, i got more back than i paid.

Yeah after thinking about it a bit more the Orange Box is still a decent deal, 3 games for $54AU is still good icon_smile.gif Though I admit I really only want Episode 2, so it still kind of sucks, however I am intersted in Portal as well, so even just these two in the package is good icon_smile.gif

bigm notice how on Steam it has Ep2 for $30 but there is no way to actually purchase it by itself icon_wink.gif Kind of annoying, since I'm primarly after the Episode, but like I said Portal has me intrigued.

I guess if I want to play Ep2 at launch (which I do) I have little choice icon_razz.gif, also it's cheaper at the moment at the discount so ... leaning towards going with the Orange Box via Steam. And you can sell HL2 and Ep1 right?

Edit According to this post on the Steam forums, you can purchase the games indivdiually after October 9th, can anyone confirm this? In which case I can just get my Episode 2 icon_smile.gif Which would be nice, however as I said before Portal does look cool, damn it! icon_razz.gif

Nope, they told me they would have to 'lock out' my account for an undescribed amount of time while they 'investigated' if I had been charged twice or not.
