LGC 07: Mafia 2 on the way

PC News | Cause more crime.
2K Games has announced that they'll be publishing Mafia 2, a sequel to the original Mafia title that sold more than two million copies worldwide. The game is being developed by Illusion Softworks, who developed the original Mafia title, and is set for release on the PC and next generation consoles.

"As the original Mafia was a big success, we are excited to leverage the power of next generation console technology to create an all-new experience, while embracing the elements that resonated with the previous game's fans," said Christoph Hartmann, President of 2K. "The 'wow' factor of Mafia 2 is definitely the benchmark-setting visual quality and action that you expect to see only in Hollywood movies". The first images of the game can be found in our media panel.

That really is looking quite swank, but I'm a sucker for that whole 50's era style in almost anything so its hardly an unbiased opinion.

Living up to Mafia's pedigree will be a pretty huge task I'd imagine.

sweet.

i loved the original Mafia, though i never finished it as when i upgraded my GPU, the game was incompatible, meaning nothing was animated.

so all the people glided around with arms straight out from their sides. like hundreds of "T"s.

i really should check it out again, see if some combination of new drivers or game patches fixed it.

Yeah it was a great game, though a bit greating in the early years when you only had model t's to drive around in.I think cops on foot could run faster then you unless it was downhill, and you couldn't physically get it up the slope of the split bridge, let alone jump it in style ala blues brothers.

Good game, if a bit cliched, but that's to be expected.

Nice. This sounds cool, especially with the original devs back.

Whoa, so it was true all along... this is incredible news! And with Illusion Softworks back at the helm! If this game is even half as good as the original game, it'll still be better than every wannabe GTA clone on the market combined.

Those screens look amazing too. I cannot wait to see this in action! MAFIA 2!!

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY! I Loved.loved.loved. Mafia, finished it twice (shame on you obs!) My computer also couldn't run it very well, the cross hairs on the sniper wouldn't load properly making it near on impossible to pass a sniper mission. I remember i had to guess where the cross hairs aimed and this didn't help when half the textures in the distance wouldn't load. And that race. Woah! that was hard. Cant wait for the second installment of a bound to be great series.

I've known about this games development for many, many months now, as I am in close relations with someone who is a tester for the game.

It's looking damned good.

It was pretty tough, but then again once you slipped ahead of the pack it was actually quite easy. From that point on you just had to keep you head about you and you were home free!

Apparently there was a bit of an exploit within the race. About 3 turns into the course, there was a side road that was blocked off by a wooden gate (or something). If you drove around the gate and followed the road, you'd end up at a point just before the finish line therefore skipping about 80% of the entire track. If you just pulled of that stunt 4 times, you'd come in first place without any of the headaches. I never tried it myself but I have been tempted...

MAFIA 2!!!!!! I'm so happy...

I am a very happy panda. This game was incredible, the only thing I wished it had was more side quest stuff (the game was very linear) but the storyline was exceptional. Who would have thought that was how it would have ended, eh? I always preferred its more realistic style to GTA's wackiness.

Oh, and how awesome was the free mode where you scored all the awesome cars? I almost got them all, but no quite, some of the tasks were insanely difficult.

^ Freeride Extreme! How could I have forgotten that! It essentially left behind any semblance of seriousness that helped define the story and just went all out bonkers with the missions you had to pull off. And the reward cars themselves were hilariously awesome.

Curiously enough, (seriously... I have no freaking idea why) I never played through it but I did watch my brother get quite far with it. I've got to give a go now. I've got the bug. Of course having watched the final episode of the Sopranos about 10 minutes ago could have had some influence too...

Oh, and I agree about the ending of the game. I hadn't ever seen a game end like that before; it had quite the impact back then. Very memorable.

Mafia 2... oh that sounds so good.

Shaky cam trailer. But ohman, that looks REALLY good.

I've been pestering my friend (who does testing for the game as his uncle is producer I think) about it and he never told me anything. Well I'm majorly impressed now.

EDIT: And I've got this confirmed from my mate, it is all in-game:

Froz says:
so
Froz says:
in-game?!
VC says:
Yeah, the fat guy is from the mission I tested
VC says:
Course my comp sucks
VC says:
first part is cutscene

OH MY GOD!

I must have it. Move over Alan Wake, Mafia II is now my most anticipated title.

I wonder if the online petition to get it going played a part in them bringing it back. They must have listened to me, signature 3245.

By far, one of the great efforts at making a decent game was Mafia, a true standout game, and the game to make me buy a HD TV, my son's operation will have to wait.
