Not surprisingly, the delays are officially to ensure that the quality is sufficient for top-line title. Funcom's CEO Trond Arne Aas elucidated, saying, "After careful consideration, and analysis of recent Beta feedback, we believe that the new release date is in the best interest of the gamers, our company and our owners."
He continued, "We are fully committed to delivering games with absolute qualities, and in the current MMO marketplace we know that only the best is good enough to truly succeed. With the new release date we have therefore given ourselves more time to meet and deliver on the massive expectations for the game."
Officially announced in 2005 and currently under development for the PC and Xbox 360, Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures is Funcom's latest attempt to get into the MMORPG market. Billed as the first true "mature" RPG, players can expect lots of gore and a modicum of titillatingly dressed inhabitants, at least if the novels are anything to go by.
The game was originally to be split between an early-game single player experience and a mid-to-high level multiplayer experience, but neither Funcom nor Eidos have elaborated on the quality improvements they're planning on making. If Middle Earth Online was anything to go by, the final game may now be significantly different to what has previously been shown. However, as a PC build is expected to be shown at Leipzig later this month, it'll be very interesting to see what aspects of the game mechanics Funcom was concerned enough about to delay the release.
