WoW expansion announced

PC News | Wrath of the Lich King.
Blizzcon's on in force, and Blizzard's making the most of it, announcing a new expansion to their apparently unstoppable MMORPG juggernaut, World of Warcraft. Titled Wrath of the Lich King, it features new levels, new character professions, new dungeons, and a brand new hero class.

Taking place in the Northrend Wastelands, players will be able to make a return to icy lands not seen since Warcraft III. Calling the tundra his home, the Lich King is apparently "one of the most powerful beings in the Warcraft universe." Setting the scene in a little more detail, he apparently "broods atop the Frozen Throne deep in Icecrown Citadel, clutching the rune blade Frostmourne and marshaling the undead armies of the Scourge."

Still, one wouldn't want to take on the Lich King without adequate preparation. To help players get themselves prepped up, the expansion will also now allow players to adjust their hairstyles and dance moves. If Michael Jackson taught us anything, it's that you never know when you might get into a dance-off, after all.

For those who think a new 'do isn't quite enough to take on one of the most deadly creatures in WoW, the expansion will also feature a new "hero class", available to players who have completed certain challenges. On creation, the Death Knight will start at a higher level and will give players the ability to blast enemies with necromantic powers.

Other new features include siege weaponry for player vs. player combat, destructible buildings, an increase in the level cap from 70 to 80, a new "inscription" profession to permanently boost your abilities, and thousands of new items.

Speaking of the expansion, Blizzard President Mike Morhaime said, "This expansion will add some of the most infamous characters and settings from the Warcraft universe to World of Warcraft. In addition to new story content, Wrath of the Lich King will introduce a number of features specifically requested by players over the past couple of years. We’re looking forward to sharing further details with everyone as development progresses."

any idea when this new expansion will be released?

well, Burning Crusade was announced at Blizzcon 2006, and released Jan 2007. i'd expect a similar timeframe, though assuming nothing gets borked during printing of discs, it could be an christmas release.

Good stuff. Although I play Guild Wars now instead of WoW, I adored WoW for its art style and just overall quality.

bleh typo, i meant BlizzCon 2005, since there was no BlizzCon 2006 - still, i thought it was BlizzCon the announcement was made, not e3. meh, whatever.

however, now the rumours are that Zul'Aman will be the last added instance for BC before LK ships, and Zul'Aman is supposedly the next content patch, so i may have inadvertently been correct-ish.

heh, was something in 2k5

and zul'aman isnt the last instance, if you've been reading anything, there's gonna be another 25 man above black temple loot qual with 6 bosses.

Considering Blizzard's plan was to release an expansion a year over a 5 year period though, and that they say this one will be created faster than BC because they're not adding in new races, they might actually have it out by january next year - a year after TBC

also, watch this. It's a clip from blizzcon that's rather lol icon_razz.gif

ah cool, now that you mention it, i was aware of a new instance.

i quit raiding a few months ago, so i haven't really been keeping down with the news. but i'm guessing this new instance will be the un-opened one in CoT?

i did hear rumours that this might be the fall of Stormwind (WC1) or the defeat of Doomhammer/The Horde (WC2). though these are probably just wishes of the lore fans - myself included.

but like i said, it's been a few months since i've bothered looking at any new rumours. i am keen to know more, if you know it though.

Doubtful, Bliz haven't exactly said anything about it yet. Some people are speculating it's an instance related to the Sunwell
