Will Wright talks Spore

PC News | New video inside.
Spore is an innovative new game from Sims creator Will Wright. Players begin life as a single cell microbe trying to survive in the oceans of an alien planet. From there, the creatures evolve through a series of game scenarios into intelligent, space-faring societies. The game uses procedural mechanics for animating player-created characters and populates the worlds using designs imported from other players online.

Spore was noticeably absent from EA’s line-up at E3 this year. In both 2005 and 2006 the game stole the show for many media outlets, winning multiple game-of-the-show awards. The expected release date is now early 2008. A few months prior to E3, in March this year, Will Wright gave a talk at the TED 2007 Conference in Monterey, California. TED brings together some of the most extraordinary people in the world and allows them 18 minutes to give “the talk of their lives”. Video from Will’s talk was released a couple of days ago.

During the talk, Will walks through several segments of the game. One of the interesting “God-like powers” he demonstrates, is the ability to pump carbon dioxide gases into the atmosphere, simulating global warming resulting in the oceans rising and eventually evaporating off the globe. If it gets hot enough, the whole world will melt down.

"The reason why I make toys like this is because I think that if there is one difference I could possibly make in the world, is that I would like to give people somehow a little bit better calibration on long term thinking", Will says towards the end of his talk. "I think that most of the problems the world faces right now is the result of short term thinking and the fact that it is so hard for us to think 50, 100 or 1000 years out."

Does anyone know if this is coming to PS3? This game looks quite awesome imo.

I'm not sure what consoles Spore is coming to, although, knowing EA, it will probably end up coming to all of them at one time or another. I don't think it'd be as cool if it went to PS3 or something, and Spore is probably DX10 compatible on PCs anyway.

Nothing new in the video, but it's still quite enjoyable watching him talk about the game and showing it off.

Woah. That's really the first time I've paid any attention to this game, which is surprising considering how much I adored the Sims when I was younger. There aren't words that could describe the sheer scale of how awesome I think this game will be. This is my top most PC game. I really can't wait. Seriously.

Loved it ever since they unveiled it a couple of years ago. Who knows when it will get released, however ;(

Wright said he wants to get it out on as many platforms as possible. If I have a PC that can run it at the time, I'll pick it up on the PC.
