Gears of War, UT3 Mac-bound

PC News | Epic Games launches a rocket.
In what is likely to be a surprising and exciting announcement for quite a few often overlooked gamers, Gears of War and Unreal Tournament 3 are both coming to the Mac. That Unreal Tournament 3 was being released on Mac has been previously announced, but the Gears of War announcement comes as quite a surprise.

The news was let slip during an interview with Mark Rein, Vice President and co-founder of Epic Games, on Spike TV's "Game Head" show. Macworld reports that after being asked whether or not Rein was happy with Epic's commitment to PlayStation 3, Rein reiterated that Epic Games was an independent developer, less concerned with platform than with delivering a good game.

Dropping a bombshell, he then added, "Don’t forget, we’re also doing Macintosh." Disbelieving, the host asked for confirmation, at which point Rein said, "Yes, Gears is going to come to the Mac and so is Unreal Tournament 3."

MacSoft, Epic's long-standing Mac-based business partner, has yet to officially announce anything. Gears of War would be a welcome release for the relatively game-starved Mac, and with the increasing focus on on making games more cross-platform by Epic Games and id, may mark the start of an era where more games actually make it to the Mac.

i don't own a mac so this may be a stupid question, but when they say its "coming to macintosh" does that mean it will work with MacOS or is microsoft doing a shifty and saying its "coming to macintosh*"

*you'll need windows on your mac

The thing with most Ps3 exclusives is that they are platform exclusive whereas 360's mostly seem to only be console exclusive with most of them releasing on PC's at a later date. The PC/Mac ports will really have a hit on how many people need to buy a 360 and with the all the unreliable hardware doing the rounds it'll have an even bigger blow.

Microsoft should've tried and prevented these ports.

Damn! That's awesome, I want Gears on my Mac, but I only got a 7300 GT in my Mac...whats that gonna do with Gears?!

Bwahaha. So now Mac owners can enjoy playing UT3 and GoW on their Macs with the standard GeForce 7300GT or integrated Intel GPU that comes with most Macs. The real rich Mac owners can enjoy top of the line graphics, with the top of the line Mac GPU, the 7600GT.

It seems while the industry is keen to move onto Macs, Apple are not so interested.

EDIT:

Why wouldn't you when thats the run of the mill GPU that came with my Mac? Its a shame too, gaming would be great on its vibrant display:

Oh well, I didn't get it for gaming anyways.

I didn't think there would be any Mac users on these forums (I'm one of those people that generalise icon_smile.gif)

To be honest, yes, Macs are very sexy indeed, and I'd be able to recommend them for non-gamers but unfortunately they are overpriced for what you get. The poor GPUs are an indicator of that. Its really disappointing they're trying to make a foray into the gaming market with GPUs like that on their top of the line machines.

EDIT: Especially when a machine with a 7600GT will set you back over $3000 easily.

I'd wager a mac worthy of playing gow/ut3 on would be quite the dimaond in the rough.

I'm a Mac lover, and own a Powermac G5 and a Macbook Pro 17", but I'm not really keen to play games on them as I can use my gaming rig, or consoles for that. I prefer my macs as general computers, used for downloading stuff, web surfing, music, video, and all the other run of the mill stuff.

My PC is only really used for my gaming and 3d work, while I leave the mac on 24/7 for the rest of the stuff.

Does this mean that we're gonna get a Mac list in the release list articles?

Funny how the Mac, still regarded as the ultimate multimedia platform, games on it have been virtually forgotten.
