Ads coming to Quake Wars

PC News | This article is sponsored by Coke.
Splash Damage, the developer for Enemy Territory Quake Wars, has revealed that the game will feature in-game advertising to pay for the costs of extra content after its initial release (aka patches).

That is according to GamesIndustry.Biz. On the issue of advertisments Managing Director of Splash Damage Neil Postlethwaite commented "For the last four years, we've put all of our effort into making Enemy Territory Quake Wars. So, we're not planning to ship this game and walk away."

"We want to keep supporting ETQW in as many ways as possible," he continued. "We'll be maintaining the persistent stats servers and the community site, and contributing to support ETQW with updates and improvements. To help cover this level of on-going support without passing the costs on to the gamer, ETQW will feature appropriate advertisements in select locations of our levels."

Coke's a hellava... something something

At first I thought the title meant admeister was coming to Quake Wars so I came in to relay my disgust, then I realized you only meant advertising. Ha Ha, that's ok. Wait... no it isn't. Well, it could have been much worse.

I thought, If I had Photoshop on this PC I'd have made a picture... oh well.

I think it's alright though. Burnout-style billboards and stuff don't bother me at all... as long as it's not as conspicuous as Airwaves in Splinter Cell, advertising to pay for extra content == icon_y1.gif

wonder if we'll see America's army adverts on there >.>

Maybe We'll get to play as a giant coke bottle?

I think the big issue here is that it's probably this advertising stuf that keeps pushing back release icon_sad.gif
It was sposed to be out already, I've already got my pre-order stuff and reged my unique username, I want to play it now icon_sad.gif.

The only way I'd be for it was if the retail price was lowered by the extra revenue the ads bring in. Which it won't, so I'm not.

It was always going to be touch and go whether i got QW or not, what with me already having BF2 and 2142, and this is another reason against.

Skiller, dont believe the stores at a retail level. They gave release dates knowing full well the game didnt have one to get pre-orders. There has been no official word from Splash Damage or ID, and until that happens; dont believe anyone!

MIkes, I own Battlefield 2 and play it quite regularly as a matter of fact, but when QW: Enemy Territory comes out, you'll be saying "Battlefield 21-forty-WHAT?". It will blow the futuristic warfare concept way out of the water. Owning both Battlefield games AND having to put up with ads in 2142, wouldnt you rather get a game featuring ingame ads that will not charge you for additional content? *Cough*Northern Strike Booster Pack*Cough*

I dont mind replacing buzz or old sweat cola with coke. But like Mikes said, I wont agree with it if they dont give me a cut.

The Dodge advertising in Crackdown is the worst in-game advertising I've ever seen. The game is meant to be in the future and they're advertising a fugly car from 2006 icon_eek.gif

i think advertising in game will become more common especially in racing sims/sandboxs/and even warefar trying to 'capture' the more realistic enviroment. even remember reading somewhere that the adverts could eventually constantly be changed via downloading new adverts from the server.

i guess ultimately if it doesnt take away too much from gameplay meaning something that could stand out, it wont be that much of a problem,.

I really don't think you can compare one game to another when one of them isn't even released yet. But, one of the main reasons I'll probably be sticking with BF2142 is, like most people who won't swap, I prefer playing as humans against humans.

It may be a little thing, but people like familiarity, or as far as familiar as you can get with giant spaceships floating through the air.

Also, I'm a little skeptic about them actually not charging for expacs. They can say all they want now, but i'll only believe it when i see it.

Correct, this is how interactive adverts have worked in Battlefield 2142 and other programs like that 3d desktop from a few years back.

It will only be a matter of time till advertising servers are hacked with pornography and goatse replacing the more appropriate media.

As for choosing 2142 or Quake Wars, I will likely choose neither. Having played the Battlefield series from the beginning, and working on several mods, I've become tired with the current shape of the series. Quake Wars, though slightly better graphically, does lack the more down to Earth feeling of its competitors, which may be appealing. Haven't played 2142 in months, and probably won't go for QW unless it is brilliant.

Exactly what I was trying to say, and put more clearly than i could.

Do we have any specs yet, btw?

Im an FPS nut, so the basis behind realism takes a backseat with me. I stuck heavy with Battlefield 2 and saw how D!CE and EA treated the community. After this, I didnt opt for 2142 for this main reason.

As far as system requirements go for Quake Wars; its been said to be "close to Quake 4" specifications. However, for the Beta Test, an AMD 64 3000+ 1.8ghz CPU does not make the cut with 1GB of RAM and a nVidia 7900GS 256MB GPU, whilst a quicker CPU will. The 1.8 is fairly slowish by today's standards but Quake 4 runs fine on a system with that speed CPU, so id take that statement with a large pinch of salt.

Umm... no.

I thought about paying lots of money for a game chock full of advertisements but probably wont go with it. No sweat - Instead I could pay top dollar for the HK special version of Quake Wars. It has some nice extra features, free patches & updates, lots of mods & some downloadable billboard porn content too. "Poke is it" this time staring Mimi Macpherson instead of her sister.

Anything that reduces the price of games (or in this case add-ons) is a good thing.

As ads become more pervasive, the cost of games will continue to decrease.

I'm dreaming, aren't I?
