WoW: The Burning Crusade Sells 100,000 units in ANZ

PC News | More than 8.5 million now subscribed.
Vivendi has sent word today that World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade has sold 100,000 units in Australia and New Zealand.

According to Jill Maxwell, merchandising manager at EB Games Australia, "Not only was The Burning Crusade the highest pre-selling game for EB Games ever, but it has also gone on to be the fastest-selling PC game ever. Blizzard clearly delivered on its promise to Australian and New Zealand fans, as witnessed by the incredible sales achieved from launch. We look forward to the ongoing success of this hugely successful franchise."

That wasn't the only good news for WoW though: it turns out there are now more than 8.5 million subscribers to World of Warcraft. The Burning Crusade sold through approximately 3.5 million units within one month in North America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand, and Malaysia.

"We're thrilled about the overwhelming response that we've received for The Burning Crusade," said Mike Morhaime, president of Blizzard Entertainment. "We have worked hard to build upon nearly every aspect of World of Warcraft with this expansion, and it's gratifying to see that players and reviewers are enjoying the new content."

How many of them still play (and pay)?

actually, Blizzard are fairly upfront by what they consider a subscriber:
Blizzard Press Release wrote
World of Warcraft subscribers include individuals who have paid a subscription fee or have an active prepaid card to play World of Warcraft, as well as those who have purchased the game and are within their free month of access. Internet Game Room players who have accessed the game over the last thirty days are also counted as subscribers. The above definition excludes all players under free promotional subscriptions, expired or cancelled subscriptions, and expired prepaid cards.
so realistically, the only people beefing up the numbers are the people who have literally just started an account, and then quit, people on expired/cancelled accounts are not counted, though it would be interesting to see those numbers too, especially since Blizzard have cancelled 100s of thousands of accounts for illegal activities in the past.
