Burning Crusade smashes records

PC News | 2.4m copies sold in opening 24 hours.
Corks will no doubt be popping at Blizzard HQ today, after it was revealed that World of Warcraft add-on The Burning Crusade, to the surprise of absolutely nobody, has sold a quite obscene number of copies since going on worldwide sale last week.

The expansion pack obliterated day-one sales record for a PC game in both North America and Europe, selling a global total of 2.4 million copies on the first day of its release. "The Burning Crusade has already exceeded even our most ambitious expectations," said an understandably chuffed Mike Morhaime, president and co-founder of Blizzard Entertainment. "We're pleased that so many players are eager to see all of the new content that the expansion has to offer, and we look forward to seeing everyone online as additional players continue to upgrade in the days ahead."

Despite Burning Crusade's immense commercial success, Blizzard pledged yesterday that it won't be rehashing the WoW formula for its next game.

Probably couldn't get enough copies on the shelves - there weren't any copies left at most of the places I went to in Brisbane last Thursday, Big W had a couple but that was it. It also says that's the European and North American players, and according to this press release they only have 3.5 million players in those regions. That's a pretty good conversion rate! I imagine once Burning Crusade is released in Korea and China the sales will go even higher.

Try considering that's 2.4m in the first 24 hours, think how many more they've sold since.

Excellent expansion though, worth it for the Blood Elf home-area alone. Loving Draenei too, those crazy Russians.

Halo 2 sold 2.4 million in 24 hours too, but was a worldwide release, whereas this is only for 2 regions, EU and US (of which, Australia is US).

i'd expect Halo to maintain the record though, since that was a full priced game, and this was a half-priced expansion.

the asian version of BC hasn't been released yet, and like magrat pointed out, that's roughly half the player-base.

(i read somewhere that Romania, which has a playerbase of ~10,000, only received 1500 units.)

I had never played world of warcraft till last sunday, I went out and bought the game and the expansion. I have loved every minute of it since. Great game with alots of depth and a great social scene for the most part.

Kmart had 3 copies left for $49 and they matched the advertised big w price of $39. EB had it for $64 so I saved $25

Well I was one of them.

Its a fantastic game and the expansion builds on the original with style. WoW caters for the casual gamer as well as the hard core fanatics. Not many games can actually do that.

One can only imagine what is Blizzard's next foray.
