Blizzard VP promises innovation

PC News | Next game "won't be another WoW".
Blizzard's vice president of development Itzik Ben Bassat - that'll be him to the left, then - has reassured gamers that the studio's next game will be a very different proposition to World of Warcraft, even though it will still be an MMOG.

"When we announce our next MMORPG it's not going to be another WoW - we're not a company that tends to tread the same ground," said Bassat in an interview with film rag Empire. "It'll be something innovative and new that really brings entertainment to another level."

Back in the present of course, World of Warcraft expansion The Burning Crusade has only recently hit shop shelves in Australia and Europe - we'll have our full verdict on that in the coming days.

That's all well and good, but how about some love for the single player game? You remember, those games that propelled your company into the right position to create WoW and amass an ever vaster tower of money than your previously had?

Okay, that sounds overly negative - but I <3 my non-MMOG Blizzard games, damnit!

I agree,

I'd love to see a Diablo 3 ( Single/Multiplayer LAN RPG )
I miss the good ol days of having a few friends over and having a massive Diablo 2 lan..
Anyone wanna try arrange one? I'm in Sydney icon_smile.gif

How about a Starcraft 2, Brutal RTS with Alien guts flying everywhere!!

Last but not least how bout a Single player Oblivion Style Diablo Game, First person, Demons jumping at you from all angles, swords swinging, blades clashing..

Ahh a Man can dream.

I think they should do another Starcraft, that no doubt helped them get to where they are and a new Starcraft would be awesome and sell pretty quickly

The next Blizzard MMORPG hey, I hope it ends up being Starcraft. That would make for a interesting online world. Might even turn out something like Mass Effect.

BOOO!

They have allready got an mmo to milk money with. What ever is happening to Star Craft Ghost. Or how about Starcraft 2 or Diablo 3.

haha Starcraft Ghost has dissapeared so many times. I was looking forward to that title too.

I personally would like to see a completely new IP from them.

Blackthorne... now that would make for some sweet remaking

Don't give them any ideas. They've already got several well established IPs that are in dire need of sequels and will sell in the bucketloads. Diablo 3 would be enough to satisfy me for years (MMO perhaps?).

And Ghost is as good as dead. Blizzard shifted focus on other projects, pushing Ghost aside.

tbh, i think Blizzard really shone with the multiplayer modes of their games. they had awesome single-player campaigns, but with WC2 -> Diablo -> SC -> D2 -> WC3, it was the multiplayer that gave them longevity.

i really don't know where they would be heading though, with their next game. of the 3 IPs, i think StarCraft 2 sounds most plausible, given Diablo 3 would share a similar/overlapped market to WoW, and would therefore reduce their WoW income, which they can no doubt afford, but doesn't really make business sense. then again, the rumours the other month were pointing more to a D3 than an SC2.

a Starcraft based MMOFPS in a similar vein as Battlefield/Quake Wars is a possibility. he does seem to use "MMOG", while dropping the RP, so perhaps that's a hint?

of course, a new IP, or a remake of an older one, might also be a possibilty.

but if i were a betting man, i think Diablo 3 will be the next Blizzard title.

i agree that it's sad Ghost is dead. i was looking forwards to it, though considering it wasn't MADE by Blizzard (just commissioned, produced), there's a possibility it'll be made into another game i guess.

btw: where did that WoW review come from? i don't remember seeing it before, and there's no discussion forum associated with it.

Blizzard have usually been at the forefront of quality and innovation so I don't think they need to say much.....the proof is in the pudding.

I agree with you there. What I was getting at is that I like their previous style of single player with non-massive multiplayer. I don't want any further iterations of their past IPs to get damaged in any way just to shoe-horn in MMO capabilities.
Granted, Blizzard are one of the least likely companies to compromse their IP for some extra dosh - but I'll be a cynic to the bitter end.

yeah, that's a fair enough point, especially with WoW taking over the world, who didn't think that there might be a World of Starcraft, and a World of Diablo around the corner?

so i guess him saying that even if they happen, they'll be different to WoW is a relief in many ways.

World of Starcraft?

it was a hypothetical name for an MMORPG based in the StarCraft universe.

Worlds of Starcraft would probably be better though.

I don't think Blizzard could ever release a World(s) of Starcraft - it'd signal the end of life as we know it. Millions would drop out of work and school as they become further engrossed in leveling their Zerg.
Christ, and people are getting all worked up over Nuclear threats?!

you could alleviate some of the threat by releasing Worlds of Starcraft to Korea. icon_wink.gif

^ icon_lol.gif POTM? If we're still doing that of course...

Except the Nuclear threat is in North Korean not South Korea. North Koreans aren't big gamers like South Korea, they're too poor.

I never thought a Worlds of Starcraft or Diablo would happen. It'd be too similar to WOW and Blizzard would just cannibalise their own market on the pc. But perhaps their next game will be a persistent world MMOG cross platform, possibly on pc, PS3 and 360. Blizzard have long wanted to re-enter the console market as Starcraft Ghost was supposed to do. If Blizzard did bring an MMOG to consoles it'd be interesting to see how it fairs against Hellgate London in popularity.
