Crazy Chicken: The Good, The Egg and the Ugly Review

PC Review | The onslaught of insane animals continues.
What has brought on the sudden onslaught of 'mad' 3D animated cartoon characters we are unsure of, but there’s a new nutjob on the block. For this year and last we've seen Crazy Frog emerge, and re-emerge from some sadistic marketer's mind and now comes the less publicly known character in Crazy Chicken. Whilst we can understand that the afore mentioned frog's craziness is outwardly expressed through his criminally insane desire to release horrendously terrible music on an unsuspecting public, it is not clear as to why Crazy Chicken has fallen prey to the same label as the amphibious sonic terrorist. Thankfully Crazy Chicken is far less irritating and has, for now, decided to maintain focused on appearing in Mindscape's casual titles featuring his name.

The Good, the Egg and the Ugly is Crazy Chicken's foray into the world of Indiana Jones-esque temple raiding with a platforming style. The genre's usual fare is on show here. Coins, gems and lost idols litter the ledges scattered throughout the game, each giving the player bonus points at the end of the level depending on how many they pick up. A time counter is also present to encourage yo to get through as fast as possible.

Gorilllas and spaceships, it just makes sense.

Crawling jumping and shooting (yes, there is shooting parents, but no blood) your way through the level is reasonably fun. There is not a lot of variety held within the game's virtual walls, however it's decent for a quick blast through.

Visually the game has a humorous bent. Simple yet effective, the stylings of Crazy Chicken take on a certain claymation like quality. In terms of gameplay, there are 24 levels in to make your way through in search of the creatively titled WHATSIT amulet. Most of what is on offer during the game is relatively limited in variety but reasonably enjoyable. As you would expect there’s lots of jumping from suspended platform to platform with a trail of coins often telling you where your next move should be to.

It's a chicken pushing a block, that's at least a bit crazy... isn't it?

There are some severe issues with the collision detection systems in place here. Many times our heroic fowl would land on platforms and hover for a few seconds and either slide off into oblivion or come crashing down onto solid ground, all for no apparent reason. This became irritating as the game went on was a major inhibitor in our enjoyment of it. It doesn’t take too long to make it all the way through the game but as it’s being marketed as a casual title this is not a major issue.

Overall The Good, the Egg and the Ugly is a reasonably enjoyable casual game. Those expecting anything more than a quick time wasting experience will be sorely disappointed, but at AU$9.95 this is the sort of game that grandparents or those who may have young children over may want to pick up to keep the young whippersnapper's out of the hair of the adults. Whilst hampered by some issues it is still a reasonably fun game to whittle away a half hour in an afternoon.
The Score
The Good, the Egg and the Ugly is decent as far as casual titles go. There is a little bit of reasonable gameplay here for some quick time killing, although limited and not without its issues.
