World in Conflict Preview

PC Preview | The Cold War is over, but you can relive the '80s standoff on your PC, minus Duran Duran! Uurgh!
While the Cold War is clearly now just a footnote in the history books, the period still serves as a particularly fertile time for game makers to develop interesting strategy fare, and one of the best games in the pipeline is World In Conflict. The game is set during the tense days of the late '80s, and you can command either the Nato or Soviet Bloc forces as each side does its best to dominate the battlefields of a Europe that has been plunged into war.

There will be multiplayer online action as well as a campaign, and the narrative will present you with some interesting scenarios. Imagine what would have happened if at the point in time when the Soviet Union was collapsing a bunch of ‘hard line’ generals took the helm and tried to reverse the USSR’s ailing fortunes by going to war, plundering as much wealth as possible.

Taking a balanced approach to the units you deploy pays dividends.

The game will see the Soviet forces not only invading the traditional European targets, but the empire will also launch an invasion of the USA with landings on the West Coast around Seattle. The narrative will be the work of Tom Clancy’s co-writer Larry Bond and, having seen a few stunning cutscenes, the plot is looking engaging, with lots of cheesy '80s references.

World In Conflict will be all about combat. The game eschews a resource-gathering economic model in favour of a more combat-driven approach, with reinforcements being granted as a consequence of your success on the battlefield. Simply put, a successful land grab gives you more forces to continue the battle.

The game is really impressive to look at and all of the tanks, helicopters and other troop types are based on accurate models of real world hardware from the time period. Having played the game in multiplayer mode, what is obvious from the onset is just how important it is to cleverly deploy forces that can deliver a ‘combined arms’ attack. You’ll need a good combination of air, anti-air, anti-tank and anti-troop forces. A simple ‘tank rush’ with heavy armour can be easily stopped by a well-balanced weaker force using combined arms tactics.

All models are based on real world hardware.

This makes World In Conflict a lot of fun to play, as you try and lure the enemy into ambushes where you can throw the most deadly concerted attacks at them at once. There will also be ‘rewards’ for successful carnage. As you take ground or trash enemy units you’ll be able to call in long range artillery support, air strikes and the most devastating of all support weapons, the tactical nuclear missile. The nukes look awesome, but have to be used with care as the fallout bloom can potentially harm your forces as well as the enemy.

World In Conflict looks like being a truly engrossing game for fans of recent efforts like Command and Conquer Generals, and it's amazing how easy it is to pick up and play as you control quite complex forces and execute clever attacks using terrain, cover and even choke points like rivers and ambushes. This will be a game to look out for in 2007 as it is one of the slickest contemporary strategy offerings in the pipeline at the moment.
Overall:
Few RTS games have the potential or the sense of clear vision as this. Hopefully this promise is fulfilled when the game lobs.

I would expect nothing less than a brilliant game from the guys behind the Ground Control series.

I've been keeping up with the news and trailers for this and I must say I've been looking forward to it a lot. The premise reminds me of a modernised version of the first few Soviet campaigns in Red Alert 2, a battlefield in suburban America. I can't wait to drive a Russian tank through the middle of a Burger King.
