Hans Christian Andersen: The Ugly Prince Duckling Preview

PC Preview | We take a look at the game based on the prolific fairytale writer.
Hans Christian Andersen may not be a familiar name to some readers, but more than likely you’ve read some of his fantastic fairytales that have captured the hearts of many over the last two centuries. Ranging from work such as The Little Mermaid, The Nightingale, The Ugly Duckling, The Tinder Box and many more memorable tales, it’s likely you’ve enjoyed the work of HC Andersen in some form.

And one company that has obviously had some influence from his work is Danish developers Gubbyworks, who are currently working away on the game that is centred on the famous fairytale storyteller, and his many stories that are now known throughout the world.

In the HC Andersen inspired game, entitled The Ugly Prince Duckling, gamers will assume the role of the creative writer himself, as you’ll need to work your way forward in his pursuit of fame and success. Set in the city of Copenhagen in the 1800s, Hans finds himself coming across the magnificent beauty of a princess who is slowly beginning to tire of her dull royal life style. Before things go too far, the story moves in typical fairytale fashion with the princess being kidnapped by an evil person named Mr. Schwartz, who plans to marry her and take over Copenhagen. This is where the courageous young Hans steps in as gamers must now travel across Copenhagen solving puzzles and avoiding dangers, and safely returning the kidnapped princess to her home.

Copenhagen is full of life, everything from its beautiful detail and lively crowds of people really bring out the illusion of a life-like town where townspeople will go about their daily routine and have great behavioural patterns. In addition, there will also be many familiar faces from Andersen’s fairytales that gamers will run into a long the way. Characters such as the Little Mermaid, the Little Match Girl and Clumsy Hans and his goat are just a few of Andersen’s characters that’ll occupy Copenhagen during his adventure.

The gameplay requires gamers to constantly interact with the habitats of Copenhagen, as well as fulfilling various puzzles and task. For instance, you’ll need to fetch various items found throughout Copenhagen in exchange for some assistance from townspeople. It’s expected that the final game will include a ton of puzzles and social-oriented gameplay features.

You can expect to fulfil all sorts of tasks for townspeople.

The appeal of the game extends just as far as the original fairytales had provided to readers. The game features a very approachable and visually appealing style, similar to that which is featured in the British animated short films Wallace & Gromit. Everything from the game’s expansive town to the lovely water effects, it seems as though The Ugly Prince Duckling should provide gamers with enough visual appeal to keep them satisfied throughout the entire game. What’s equally good about this style is that it captures the essence of the original fairytales perfectly.

While most children games aren’t particularly appealing to most hardcore games, The Ugly Prince Duckling has the potential of being something much better. With the backing of probably the most influential stories and characters of our time, the game could be an enjoyable experience for gamers looking for a lighthearted and family-directed title.
Overall:
The game is scheduled for a released later this year and could be a massive hit amongst the kids.
