King Kong Preview

PC Preview | PALGN goes hands on with the upcoming blockbuster game.
Peter Jackson's next big movie after the epic Lord of the Rings titles is King Kong. There have been many King Kong movies, but none of them have been particulary memorable. Like any big movie these days a game is going to be launched beside it come December. It is pretty much accepted that games based on movies are pretty average, with only a few exceptions titles like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory & Charlie's Angels bring down the standards. When Ubisoft first announced King Kong we were a little duvious, but as details slowly trickled out we began to sit up and take notice.

Today we had the opportunity to go hands on with King Kong and we left feeling fairly impressed. The first mission we tried was called Chased by TRex, In it players take control of a human as they are navigating through the jungle. The first thing we realised was the mouse sensitivity, moving the mouse only a little bit actually moves the character a fair bit. Players don't have their weapon out by default either, so to shoot you need to press the space bar to actually bring the weapon out, which can make moving and shooting a little bit of a difficulty.

The environments are fairly epic, even though they are a little smaller than we had initially thought they would be. In the mission players walk around casually until you catch up with some of your team mates who advise you they just ran away from a "giant thing" which surfaces about twenty seconds later. The T-Rex towers over you and you have no choice but to run, or if you're feeling brave you can stand and shoot. Whilst dealing with avoiding your own death your fellow buddies are getting slaughtered by the T-Rex. We don't want to ruin the rest of the mission, but it was a very cool introduction to the game; however we did expect to take control of King Kong in our first mission.

The next mission, simply titled "Kong Vs Trex" satisfied our cravings. The first part of the mission is a simple battle between Kong and TRex, the battle takes place with the mouse and the directional keys on the keyboard. There is no hub, so we found it a little hard to keep track of who was winning or losing the battle. King Kong himself is very nimble and runs up branches and picks up loose trees and uses them to attack. After completing this you have a bit of a free roaming opportunity, which is a good opportunity for the game to demonstrate the freedom of the title, you can literally go anywhere and the giant ape can swing from branches and jump just about anywhere. When we'd had a bit of a swing we went and looked for Anne, who was screaming for help as she is being attacked by two T Rexes again. Unfortunately they are a lot more aggresive this time around, and the battle is much harder with two dinosaurs, in fact we got slaughtered.

That ended our playtime with the short teaser, which left us asking more questions than had been answered. The game ran very smoothly with no real hiccups and the soundtrack already sounds like it is a real winner. Ubisoft have done a good job in creating incredible atmosphere, if the game stays this intense the whole way through they may need to include a heart rate monitor with the game, as there appeared to always be something going on.

The final game is going to represent the visual quality of the movie, which means all the audio and visual likenesses of the movie should be integrated into the game. Ubisoft have managed to keep very quiet about this game, so we won't be surprised if we see a few extras included as well.

We're hoping we'll have an opportunity to play a bit more of the title down the track, although for now we're pleased to report that the game is looking like it will break the tradition of normal movie-game tie ins and we couldn't be happier with that.
Overall:
King Kong is epic, we only played a little but it was apparant just from this short playtime that this is going to be a game to watch.

this game looks good. but i have not been a fan of movie games as they are really easy to complete. etc. the matrix, lord of the rings and charlie and the chocolate factory looks to crap for me. and harry potter games are lame as well. so the way this game sounds it sounds as though it could be good

I tried the demo of the game yesterday and I really wasn't as blown away as I thought I'd be. It looks and sounds great (although the exclusion of 5.1 scares me a bit. Please, PLEASE let that be an option in the final version..), but the Kong section it didn't control all that well. PC's have never been able to handle platformer like movement as well as consoles before, so I wasn't expecting any different. The Jack section however handled perfectly, although the exclusion of the crosshair makes things a bit tougher. I know you can turn it on, but that would ruin what the dev's were going for. I was really looking forwards to playing this, but it didn't really stand out to me as something different. Maybe it's because the levels available were already released as trailer footage (which I have watched many times over). That probably diluted my final impressions...

The PC version seemed like the obvious version to get, but if it doesn't ship with 5.1, I'm going to go console. A game that is trying to immerse the player, and they don't provide directional sound... wtf.

whee! rolling around like a monkey *pun intended* except, you roll on everything, and anything you roll on, gets squished. Ahh, great being an oversized ape, eh? icon_smile.gif

What I am a little weary about is the fact that you only play as Kong for about 30% of the game. I can't seem to decide if that is a good or bad thing. Other than that little quibble though, I am looking forward to this for sure. It looks rather nice and immersive, so that's enough for me to keep my eyes on it.

PC. It's readily available on most sites. Gamespot, 3Dgamers, Megagames are a few you can check. It's only 289Mb, which nowadays is a very small download for a demo.
