Mass Effect 3 co-op multiplayer and 'Galaxy at War' mode announced

PC News | Yes, you can probably play as a Quarian. Weirdo.
Long rumoured and, for anybody following at home, quite obviously true, BioWare has today announced via their official forums various multiplayer components for next year's Mass Effect 3, a first for the predominately single player focused series. If you're thinking "deathmatch!', you're completely wrong. Instead, Mass Effect 3's multiplayer will be focused on two components; four player co-operative missions, and something BioWare are dubbing the 'Galaxy at War' mode.

Developed out of BioWare Montreal (which BioWare specifically notes is not the main single player campaign, of which is instead housed at Edmonton), the four player co-operative mode will allow, you guessed it, four players to team up and take on assorted missions together under the backdrop of the major galactic war that serves as the backbone for Mass Effect 3's story. Though the single player mode is dedicated to Commander Shepard's story, as well as his various companions, the co-operative mode will allow players to create their own unique soldier from a variety of classes and races, including Turian, Krogan, Asari and more. The levelling and weapon upgrade systems from the single player will also be a part of building your online character.

These co-operative missions will tie into the aforementioned Galaxy at War feature, which is somewhat of a hub for all multiplayer and networking activities, tracking global progression of co-operative mission success to simulate the tides of the overall galactic battle. As a bonus, this Galaxy at War mode will optionally tie into the single player campaign, with co-operative mission success having an impact on the various battles that take place during the solo missions. BioWare promises that the Galaxy at War feature also has other goodies to play and interact with, but are keeping mum on extras for now.

So there we have it, multiplayer in Mass Effect 3. Fans should expect more news on the co-operative missions and the Galaxy at War feature in the very near future.

Can't believe they delayed the game for this.

No. All multiplayer components are optional.

Fuck the haters. I can play as a Krogan in a multiplayer co-op Mission.

This is...amazing

Also hope this means we get a female model for each race.

Agreed with Benza, amazingly they've done the very thing I hoped they would do and include co-op as an optional extra! And I've read that although it links to the story, it won't change any possible endings to the single player campaign itself. Also, characters in the co-op campaign are new and will not be carried over from single player.

Don't care, just make the singleplayer as good and as long as Mass Effect 2 and I'll be happy... The fact that both components are developed by different studios makes me optimistic about that. I still think the idea of multiplayer in a game like Mass Effect is just pointless though.

I like that it's story-based co-op, as opposed to crappy laggy stupid deathmatch which nobody plays after a month, they're wasting their money on. Stupid Bioshock 2.

Gragh. OK, so here's the thing.

I'm on record as having been rather positive toward the idea of Mass Effect multiplayer of almost exactly this sort. Heck, I was fine with the idea of deathmatches, as long as they were 3 vs. 3 rather than a free for all.

But it's so aggravating that this whole thing is transparently being done to ensure the online pass can be stapled to the game. It's got nothing to do with it being fun, it's got nothing to do with it being a better game, and it's got everything to do with them hating Gamestop and wanting to take a chunk out of the used game market.

What's galling about it is that EA shows every sign of actually hating games and gamers.

They managed to do online pass without multiplayer though?

I don't really see the multiplayer as a product of the online pass so much as the online pass being integrated into absolutely everything it can be, which every developer is going to do if they're not doing it already. As Benza pointed out, Mass Effect 2 used the online pass without any online components at.

I'd say multiplayer is more an attempt to increase the commercial value of the game, especially brand awareness and commercial longevity. I wouldn't be surprised if a Hoard mode with leaderboards and what have you was part of the co-op rather than just missions in order to keep people playing.

EA want to establish Mass Effect as a big name franchise. It's sizable already, but still has a very long way to go. They probably see multiplayer as both an extra, community focused feature that will hopefully keep the franchise in people's minds, and as a solid way to exploit the online passes.

Grumble grumble. No, I am not a fan of online passes in any way. (Although, oddly enough, I'd be fine with dropping the price of games and selling the online component separately, as Extra Credits suggested.) But Benza, you are right; it got done last time without even having online.

Well, then I guess all I have to say is: So, who wants a Krogan Engineer on Xbox Live? Seriously, I'm a frickin' good Engie.

Doesnt seem too hard.

1. Get mass effect models
2. Put 2 levels before final level
3. Add 30 extra optional missions/levels
4. ???
5. Profit.

ME2 was terribad.
