Syndicate reboot info leaks

PC News | Business is War.
Anybody who's been following the gaming industry rumour mill will be well aware that a Syndicate reboot is right around the corner. One of the Peter Molyneux's famed franchise from the early days of PC gaming, there hasn't been a new Syndicate game since 1996's Syndicate Wars. Set to join Deus Ex and the upcoming Thief 4 as a classic series reborn, the new Syndicate is known to be in development at Starbreeze Studios, the Swedish developer responsible for The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay and The Darkness.

After much waiting, it seems information of this reboot has finally leaked, along with a bunch of tiny screenshots too. The original posting of the information can be found over at NeoGAF, which explains that the data was acquired from an early posting on EA's Origin store (it is known that EA would be publishing the reboot).

Described as a 're-imagination' of the original game, Syndicate is set in the dystopian cyberpunk world of 2069, where cities and locals are no longer governed by politicians but instead regional 'Syndicates'. Revolutionising the world of consumerism and information, Syndicates have equipped civilians with neural chips that allow them access to products and data at an instant, at the cost of the individuals true behavior and privacy. In a world without government oversight, and Syndicate businesses controlling everything, civilians and lives are easily exploitable for financial gain.

Fighting battles for each Syndicate corporation are the 'Agents', bio-enhanced super soldiers equipped with advanced neural chips, giving them access to a network of information, products and abilities that stretch throughout the entire world. Just as with past Syndicate games, the player will play as one of these Agents, specifically one Miles Kilo, a prototype Agent for the Eurocorp Syndicate.

Though the premise of Syndicate offers plenty of homage to the original games, the reboot will play strikingly different on a mechanical level. The isometric camera has been replaced with a first person perspective, giving the game a 'first person shooter' vibe, literally described as a 'Visceral FPS Experience'. As expected, players will have a host of weapons and equipment available to shoot and explode their way through the story.

The aforementioned neural chip will grant the player various abilities and powers, not unlike what we've seen in recent games, such as Deus Ex: Human Revolution. These abilities include x-ray vision to see through walls and bullet time, all enabled by the installed DART6 neural implant.

The single player will likely be the primary focus, with a world crafted by veteran sci-fi author Richard Morgan, who recently worked on Crytek's Crysis 2. Syndicate will also include a four player online co-op mode set across nine re-imagined missions taken from the very original Syndicate.

Until we receive an official announcement from EA, or information pops up in next month's gaming magazines, the above is all we have to go on. We also have a handful of very small leaked screenshots, which you can see below.

Will Starbreeze succeed in reviving the Syndicate franchise? Stay tuned to find out.

Before people get too loco with excitement, I want to note that the Starbreeze of today is very, very different from the Starbreeze of yesteryear. A hugely significant portion of the team that made both Butcher Bay and The Darkness jumped ship from the company a couple of years back.

The team that is working on Syndicate is largely completely different to the team that made the old Starbreeze games.

I... don't know how to feel about this. This is not the news that I was hoping for.

Syndicate.

I hope they keep some strategic elements, like the research, destructible buildings and an assortment of traps. If it's a straight-up, gung-ho shooter I'm not touching it.

I like that 99% of reboots and revivals this generation consist of "lets take a popular genre/style, and shoe horn the franchise into that", instead of "lets take the fundamentals of the franchise, and try and update them for a modern era".

Oh wait, no, I don't like that at all.

Master of Orion - first person shooter

Zork - rhythm game

Using the originally leaked Syndicate PR, this post on GAF sums it up pretty well.

Having only heard of Syndicate in name only, and knowing pretty much nothing about it, I decided to head over to wikipedia to get a brief overview the original games.

The last comment in the article regarding the remake:

Latest news on Neogaf sadly shows that developer Starbreeze is re-imagining the franchise as a "Visceral FPS", which will no doubt go down as one of the more pointless genre-changes in franchise name-jacking ever.
Heh, gotta love wiki edits.

Edit: And now it's gone. That was quick. icon_surprised.gif

Elite is going to be an action shooter? Really?!

It was an awesome spaceship and trading sim. That's tantamount to blasphemy to reduce it to a generic action game...

while i'm a little surprised by the genre change, i am willing to wait and see.

heh, i was about to wish for more Cyberpunk, and specifically, a a reboot of Shadowrun, forgetting for a moment that they already tried that with similarly unwanted results...

Damn it!

I was a huge fan of the original on the Amiga and was really looking forward to an updated title and now I've got a generic sounding FPS set in a bleak future.

Couldn't they just have got Dawn Of War II and put a Syndicate skin on it?
That's all I wanted!

This truly tarnishes the Syndicate name.

ya know after all the hand wringing and complaining about Metroid and fallout going the first person route. You think people would at least wait a bit before they declare the franchise dead.

Good examples, at least for Metroid, which is perhaps the post child of genre shifts turning out to be a huge success. Fallout I wouldn't agree on, until Obsidian did what Bethesdont with New Vegas.

I think the cynicism stems from the seemingly brash obsession the modern industry has with first person shooters. Like, rather than take a look at Syndicate, and what made Syndicate unique, and try and update and rebuild it for a new generation, games like this seem like they started with 'first person shooter' as the template, and decided to squeeze and fit the franchise into that. Deus Ex: Human Revolution is an example of modernisation done right, but this? At a first glance, and even an lingered stare, you'd never in a million years think 'Syndicate'.

It would be nice to be wrong, and for this to turn out like Metroid Prime did, but I'm far too cynical to expect that icon_razz.gif. Its never really a question of quality. This Syndicate reboot could be an amazing game. Its just a question of "why this?".

Just waiting for someone to announce they're taking text based classic "Adventure" and turning it into a GoW clone or something.

I could buy Syndicate as an FPS.... but it can't be an outright crazy one like vanilla Quake or Bulletstorm or something. That's how the brief reads so far.

It needs tactics and a methodical approach. Half the time in Syndicate was spent laying traps for enemies. Trying to isolate and execute lone agents. Taking that opportunistic sniper shot where no one will notice =P

How much of what was wrong with Fallout 3 had anything to do with it being first person though?

I mean don't get me wrong it could suck hard. And by all means jump all over it then. But at least wait till they start showing 'call of duty in the future' as the game play before you start raging. Instead of announcing that it's going to have a different view point.

That's not really what Visceral means. It's more just like a guttural and intense experience.
