Star Trek Online to go free-to-play

PC News | Galactic exploration for less.
Like many MMOs before it, Star Trek Online developer Cryptic Studios has announced that their acclaimed PC title will be going free-to-play sometime later this year.

"In addition to seeking out new life and exploring strange new civilizations, part of our continuing mission for Star Trek Online is to expand and improve," said Jack Emmert, the CEO of Cryptic Studios. "Transitioning to a free-to-play model is a natural way to share all we've built with a broader community of players and we couldn't be more excited."

What this free-to-play model means is that the game will be available for download and play at no charge, with additional features being available "a la carte" via a virtual store. Current and new players can upgrade to Gold status for $14.99 a month, with features like guild creation and additional character slots only available to Gold subscribers.

More details about this new play model, as well as a detailed list of the differences between Gold and free Silver players can be found at the official website.
