Team Fortress 2 is now free to play

PC News | The doctor brings the goods.
Remember when Valve gave away Portal for free? No? Okay, how about when they released Alien Swarm as a free title? Perhaps more recently you'll remember the company giving away Volume One of the Portal 2 soundtrack for free as well?

The point is that Valve must really dig giving away free stuff, because they're still not done digging into their bag of goodies, and today they give us an extra special treat, announcing that Americas favourite war themed hat simulator Team Fortress 2 is free to play. Free, for everyone, forever.

This reveal coincides with their latest update, the 'Uber Update', which includes new hats and weapons, as well as a short 'Meet the Medic' film. Check out the film below, and boot up Steam for your free copy of the game.

God I love Valve so much.

Brilliant short (Meet the Pyro is going to have a hell of a time being better than Medic), absolutely awesome new weapons and the new map is really well thought out.

Mind you, theres quite a few bugs, such as the Demo's Grenade Launcher not launching, but instead laying "airborne mines" and the Solly's standard shotty refusing to work, but it's been a fantastic patch.

Just to those who are concerned about F2P, there are restrictions:

Free
Backpack: 50 slots
Items: Standard
Crafting: Limited blueprints
Trading: Receive items only
Gifting: Can receive gifts

Premium
Backpack: 300 slots (expandable up to 1000)
Items: Standard, Rare and Cosmetic
Crafting: All blueprints
Trading: Full trading
Gifting: Can give and receive gifts
"EVERYTHING ELSE IS THE SAME"

Oh so tempted to buy the Uber pack from the store but it costs an arm and a leg ($99!).

It also seems like F2P is the way to go for making money for several devs and gives the customers a chance to demo the games to see if they like it.

Yep. Steam has been Mac compatible for awhile now, and supports Mac versions of Portal, Portal 2, the Half-Life saga, and Team Fortress 2 (among others).

Now no one has any excuse. It's time for some doctor-assisted homicide.

Downloading it now.

I played it on the PS3... but yeah. That was terrible.

Valve, you are keeping PC gaming alive, and i love you for it.

I don't like the game, but I think this shows us again how Valve are the most generous developer out there.

So I have a premium account as I bought it a while ago, right?

Correct, anyone who bought the game before it became F2P is a premium account. And you get a free hat for it.

Which is what matters the most.

I've said it before, I'll say it again.

Valve need to go into the movie business, starting with TF2: The Movie.
