Champions Online to be free to play

PC News | Time to dust off the cape and mask.
Superhero MMORPG Champions Online will be free to play starting early next year, as a press release from publisher Atari details.

While the core game will be free to download and play for new players, extra features and additional content will be made available once they upgrade to Gold status. Current subscribing players will automatically be upgraded to Gold, but it looks like they will need to continue dishing out the monthly fee to keep their premium status.

John Needham, CEO of developer Cryptic Studios, had this to say about the decision;

"Transitioning Champions Online to the free-to-play model is a great opportunity to reach a whole new audience of PC gamers that view subscription fees as a barrier to entry. By taking care of our current subscription-based community and welcoming the addition of new players through free-to-play, Champions Online is poised to build upon its success and to establish a new leadership position as the first free-to-play superhero MMO."

Champions Online features an extensive character creator, a wide range of powers to suit any theme or playing style and the ability to create your own nemesis. The game's free-to-play closed beta will begin on November the 9th and will be available to a select number of current players.

oh sweet. I enjoyed this game, but didn't play it enough to justify paying for it.

With both this and LOTR now free to play, I wish WoW would just follow this trend. I know I'm dreaming though.

its also unrealistic - i mean with the whole sub based call of duty of the horizon - they wont let a penny slip , still playing on private severs is about the closet youd get

Also D&D, of course most of those have gone Free because they couldn't compete with Wow any other way. Wow doesn't really have any motivation to go free when it still has millions of people paying 20 bucks a month for it.
