Mass Effect 2: Lair of the Shadow Broker priced and dated

PC News | Ahh, I'll buy it at a high price.
About a month ago, almost to the day, we revealed that BioWare was working on a new downloadable content pack for Mass Effect 2 that would explore the saga of everyone's favourite blue alien Liara T'Soni in Lair of the Shadow Broker.

As silent as the Shadow Broker his/her/itself ever since announcement, BioWare today has finally revealed pricing and release date details, as well as a four new screenshots which can be found below.

Following the trend of once-per-month-paid-DLC, Lair of the Shadow Broker will go live on PC and Xbox 360 September 7 in the United States, and will be priced at 800 BioWare/Microsoft points. This makes it the most expensive Mass Effect 2 to date, with other mission packs Overlord and Kasumi's Stolen Memory costing 560 BioWare/Microsoft points. Converted to real world currency, Lair of the Shadow Broker is valued at AU$11.24.

As for detailing the package, BioWare has been tight-lipped, but promises that the adventure will take you and Liara from the Illium high life to the secret lair of the Shadow Broker, include five new achievements, a 'Shadow Broker intel center', new research, and the ability to continue your relationship with Liara should you have established one in Mass Effect.

The PC version of Mass Effect comes with Bring Down The Sky for free, and its fun, but Pinnacle Station is rubbish so you pretty much get all the good stuff in the one package.

There's no known GOTY for ME2 in the works but I suspect it will come eventually. Its due on the PS3 January next year and I figure EA will bundle in some DLC.

I assume ME1 would have been patched a few times by now? Has it been made any better for the PC version of the game? I mean.. is it worth getting ME1 at this point and possibly play through that first while I wait for a ME2 GOTY to come out?... Will I be disappointed by the graphics etc?

I still think the first is great on PC. The dudes who did the port did a really good job, and even improved the squad controls. There's some bugs, but no more than the usual, and most of the important ones have been patched. Its running on the original version of UE3. I think it looks good, but it really depends on your standards.

Most of the issues the first game has are not so much bugs as they are strange design choices. Stuff like the Mako and uncharted world exploration 50/50'd the fanbase. Thankfully you can avoid that stuff if you just wnat the main quest.

The story is good and if you're interested in the franchise its definitely worth playing. The last couple of hours of the main plot are crazy epic and awesome.

Where would you get a ME2 GOTY? If you got it on PC, you'd have the opportunity to transfer your save file from ME1 into ME2. If you got it on PS3, you wouldn't be able to, though BioWare are apparently working on some introduction sequence for the PS3 version to bring people up to speed on the story.

For the type of game it is, I would be getting it for PC.. I don't rightly know what expect from PS3 games anymore... originally it was to play games like this but then I found myself going back, time and again, to the PC for the better mouse/keyboard controls and generally graphics. Some games "just work" on the PS3 and some don't.. and it doesn't seem to follow any particular pattern or genre.

Had a go of the ME2 demo over the weekend. Please tell me it is not as chatty as the first part of the demo suggested... I am all for the KoTOR style character development, story and interactions.. but there was an awful lot of talking going on while there was an ever present sense of urgency.

Other than that, I very nearly bought the game there and then but I think I should finish some other purchases first. Definitely something I will be keeping eye on the price of... wait for it to drop and I will snap it up.

What's the demo mission?

From what I can tell.. they have the first part of the game, where you "wake up" and have to get out the research/science place.

The second mission they have in the demo is later on in the game and is...

where you have to free some person from a prison space station and the warden tries to capture you, so you have to fight your way out.

I can't believe they picked that mission. Out of every mission they picked the worst? But going by that if you felt it was too "talky" it doesn't really change.

I guess it's just been too many years since I last played KoTOR, which is exactly how this game (demo) seemed to play out.. the amount of talking is not so much the problem.. it's just the amount of seemingly irrelevant chatter that goes on during a time of crisis. It's one thing to be sitting around at the bar/club after a good mission or two, talking about old war stories and the like.. but it's entirely different to be talking about people's motives for their sudden appearance in the middle of a fire-fight.. icon_biggrin.gif

I've started playing the first one again to try and get a relationship with Liara so I can see what happens with that in the new DLC. And wow.

I missed the upper citadell in ME 2, but now playing it again. Thank **** it was gone.
