Age of Empires Online announced

PC News | You need 5000 gold to advance to the digital age.
The classic real time strategy franchise returns, with Microsoft today announcing Age of Empires Online.

A more condensed experience compared to the older Age of Empires titles, Online keeps the traditional formula of empire building, unit training, resource mining, weapon and armor upgrading, as well as advancing through the various ages to open new upgrading options.

Built with online gameplay in mind, there is full support for cooperative and competitive multiplayer matches, and the best part? Its entirely free to play on Games for Windows Live.

Check out the quirky new art direction and gameplay over at the official website.

That...is a good question :/. The press release just states "Free-to-play experiences via Games for Windows – LIVE", word for word.

One of the new features, that I stupidly forgot to include in the article, is a persistent capital city that grows even when you're offline.

After clicking about 4 'more information' buttons on various M$ websites I eventually landed here.

Looks like it is free-to-play but you have to pay for and download (digital only) the software first.

Hahah... so it's free once I've paid? Awesome. Thanks M$! =)

I guess they mean there is no subscription fee as most games with "Online" in the title will require.

Q: How much will it cost?
A: Stay tuned for details
Pretty much says it all

Heh. Nice tagline.

Also, I'd be a lot more interested if it included the single player campaign as well. I liked playing through the historic battles that were fought by some of the great leaders and civilisations of history. To me, that's where most of the original games appeal lies. Still good news, though.
