Starcraft II becomes the biggest PC game launch of 2010

PC News | Surprise...not!
Starcraft II was finally released last week; twelve years that appear to have been well spent. With such an immense following it comes as no surprise to see how well Starcraft II has performed from a commercial standpoint, the results of which were made available through a press release.

The opening-day release spanned across every continent except Africa and Antarctica, leaving a huge number of sales behind it. In the opening twenty-fours hours alone, over one million copies were purchased. The following day saw a further half million added to the tally, making Starcraft II the fastest-selling strategy game of all time.

Mike Morhaime, CEO and co-founder of Blizzard Entertainment, said; 'We launched StarCraft II in eleven different languages and on five different continents because we wanted to make sure as many players as possible were able to log on and play on day one...we're pleased that so many people around the world have already picked up a copy of the game, and we look forward to welcoming even more players to Battle.net in the weeks and months ahead'.

It looks as though the wait was worthwhile for both parties involved. Hopefully Starcraft III will be released sometime before the turn of the century. Until then, keep enjoying a part of video game history.

Do people still say "not"? :-)

Surely it must be the biggest launch in many years, or at least since the Sims 3. What else has there been?

Apparently the wow expacs outsold it at launch.

Oh right, forgot about that one. Biggest selling PC game of the year isn't that impressive so I thought it might be in a few years.

IMO this is more impressive than being the fastest selling PC game in the last six months.

I don't know, when was the last time there was a truley blockbuster RTS? They've always been kind of a niche genre.

No Antarctic release yet? What a gyp.

I'll probably pick this up next time I buy a new computer. I imagine it will be around for a long time.

Those penguins are missing out, haha.

I'm pretty sure Blizzard is already making a profit from this game. With its US$100 Million budget, it seems like it they only needed to sell around 1.7 million copies of the standard edition to break even. Considering there's been quite a ton of limited editions sold I'm sure the numbers needed to break even are even smaller.

+ advertising and promotion + server fees for battlenet etc.

I don't doubt they'll make a **** of money off it but It's not quiet that simple.

Is this really an exciting victory? I mean, were there any other massive PC releases this year?

^...Beat hazard?

This was fortold before the game even got a release date, that it will sell obscene amounts of copies in one week. No surprise.

SCII is so awesome that you have to buy it even if you suck at RTS. You have an obligation to practice and be good at it, just so you can enjoy Blizzard's work. icon_smile.gif
