Australian Starcraft players to have access to North American servers

PC News | Expanding the rival base.
Australian gamers will be pleased to know that their version of Starcraft II Wings of Liberty will allow them to play on North American servers within 60 days after the launch of the game. The game will of course run best on local servers but an option to play against North American players has been included, giving players more choice.

Players with the copy of the game will automatically gain the option to download the North American version of the game client through Battle.net.

Starcraft II Wings of Liberty is set to release in Australia on 27 July 2010.

No, the interview said they won't

Q: If I have already purchased the North American version, can I also play on the Southeast Asia/Australia/New Zealand servers?
A: No. To have the option to play on both servers, you must purchase the Southeast Asia/Australia/New Zealand version of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty. This solution is specifically targeted to address gamers in Southeast Asia/Australia/New Zealand who have social relationships with North American players from previous Blizzard Entertainment titles.

On the plus side, I can now play with my friends back in Aus, PLUS they are forced to have the lag. icon_smile.gif

ok I must of missed this info, why are they even region locking multilayer at all? That... seems **** up?

Yer.. why region lock the servers???? I can understand the need to separate the player-base (from a logistic and administrative point of view) and ensure that Aussies buy from Australia etc.. but the need to actually download a separate client to play sounds a bit over the top...?

They claim it's to do with ensuring lower latencies. They probably have a slew of business reasons too.

it's at least partly due to payment options too (since in some countries they have pay less for x amount of playtime options).

Ah yeah. I believe that's happening in Russia among other locations (China perhaps?)
