Alien Swarm now available on Steam for free

PC News | Is this going to be a standup fight, sir, or another bug hunt?

Keeping with their promise as previously reported, Valve has today released Alien Storm for free on Steam.

The co-op multiplayer alien shooter has you playing as gruff and tough space marines, equipped with a number of futuristic weapons and equipment, as they take on hordes of swarming aliens. Hence the name.

Alien Swarm started its early life off as an Unreal Tournament 2004 modification. The development team, later picked up by Valve, went on to develop Left 4 Dead 2 and are currently working on Portal 2.

As said, Alien Swarm for Steam is totally free. Just boot up Steam and prepare yourself for a ~2GB download. With four player co-op, 64 achievements, and an unlockable alien bug hat for Team Fortress 2, this is one tasty treat not to be missed.

You need to finish 2 coop games online to get it.. I think its a heavy hat according to what everyone else is saying on steam forums.

Also, the games that I've tried to enter are o so super lag. I'm not sure if thats because the host is o/s or just because of crappy netcode.

Offline mode was hot though.

is anyone up for a game? I've tried to jump into games with randoms but I always either end up lagging out or for some reason being put into a spectator slot.

Its awfully hard starting as a level 1 while everyone else has somehow managed to get up to lvl 10+ and start yelling at you for being noob.

It doesn't help the game has no manual either -_-

Well I judge this as not a bad little top-down shooter. The constant unlocks make it rewarding. The maps and missions don't seem too varied so far, but I've only played a handful of missions.

Similar to L4D, best played with a group of co-operative people.

The learning curve is pretty steep (particularly when starting out on HARD), but you level up fairly quickly. A friend and I were able to get all the way up to the last mission in one sitting, before calling it a day once we'd died at the very end for the third time in a row and Denny/A13x popped in to laugh at our corpses.

GG! I haven't played a Tech (or Officer) yet, but keeping you alive was also rather intense. The aliens literally come from everywhere when some of those hacks start. Once we stopped just hanging around and got on with it, it was quite a lot easier.

I dont know if you know, but when you play as tech a screen pops up and you need to quickly do a disarm puzzle similar to that in bioshock 1 when you did hacking. Like turn the bits of the pipe to complete the circuit/let the water through. So while I can see alien's swarming us I'm like CRAP CRAP CRAP CRAP D:

Then when I was disarming I got knocked away but the other guy we were playing with finished it off so it was all good

Turrets are a god send though.
