Final Fantasy XIV date and details

PC News | PC version coming quite soon.
It seems like only yesterday that we were playing Final Fantasy XIII... Actually, it was only as recently as March. However, it seems that the PC version of Final Fantasy XIV is only just around the corner itself. While the PS3 version that latest MMORPG foray from the mercurial Square Enix franchise isn't due till March 2011, the PC version will be released on 30 September 2010. And that's the Australian date.

But that's not all that the lengthy Square Enix release provided. Game details, collector's edition and system specs were all dished out. Set in the war and strife torn land of Eorzea, players in Final Fantasy XIV are tasked with the collection of crystals, which are apparently the "cornerstone" of the game world.

“This September, players around the world will join together to explore the fascinating and exciting realm of Eorzea,” said Hiromichi Tanaka, Executive Producer of Final Fantasy XIV. “We’re presenting players with a new style of online gameplay, that we know will please avid fans of online games, but welcome more casual gamers as well with the variety of gameplay and story-driven content.”

All new Final Fantasy XIV players will receive a 30 day free gameplay period. Players will receive a discount to their initial service fees in the form of a complimentary, all-access pass to the new realm of Eorzea. The regular 30-day subscription fee & additional characters fees (maximum of eight characters per account) will be available upon the game's release. Also for each account, one retainer (a non-playable character that will maintain item sales within the game as well as provide item storage while the user is logged out of the game) will be free of charge.

Along side the standard version which will retail for AU$89.95, a collector's edition will be available on 22 September for AU$109.95, to give keen players a chance to get into the action early. The contents include:
  • Early Access: Play a few days prior to the release of the PC Standard Edition
  • Behind-the-Scenes DVD: Get an insider look at the making of Final Fantasy XIV with exclusive video content, interviews and more in this special documentary DVD
  • Security Token: A Final Fantasy XIV branded Security Token used in addition to your regular password
  • Adventurers Branded Tumbler: Carry a small piece of Eorzea around with you with this branded tumbler
  • Map of Eorzea: A detailed map showing the key areas of Eorzea, essential for the committed traveller
  • Travel Journal: Record your travels in this journal filled with pages of never-before-seen concept art
  • 30-day free gameplay
  • Guest Pass: Invite a friend to play free for a limited time
  • Game Disc
  • Game Manual
And to finish up, a Final Fantasy XIV beta will be available sometime in early July. Details are still to be released, brut the required PC specs are now available:

Play what now?

That's okay, this article is so full of free and fee, it is easy to miss that icon_biggrin.gif .

FFXI is cheaper, $10 pack but then I don't have time to be committed to an MMO these days, real life is taking up too much of my time!!!

I wonder what's keeping the PS3 version? Anyway, good to see SE keeping a good stream of games coming, I'll be keeping an eye on this one. Feedback from PC gamers should be interesting.

that collector's edition is terrible. Compared to the assassins creed ones and others that come with figurines etc. The Final Fantasy XIII one was complete ****. Why would you pay so much extra for stuff that people are going to eventually get anyway? and for $20 extra you can send your friend an invite to a demo?

square need to rethink their incentives i think. It's worse than a showbag full of vouchers.

A week head start can be a very big incentive. Less people in the low level areas resulting in less competition of limited resources. However, it is essentially a cash grab.

Can't say the Collectors Edition tickles my fancy either.

Has anyone played this (beta?) yet and can given their impressions of the game? So far I'm interested in picking it up. But only one character slot? That's disappointing.

Technically you only need one as you change a class simply by equipping a new weapon, and doing so will make your toon stronger overall. But for people like me who love making heaps of toons of different races, its a little disappointing. I wouldn't say its game breaking though.

I played the beta really briefly cause it was incredibly boring. The game is very similar to monster hunter in terms of game mechanics. It's mostly about equipping yourself with better armor and weapons. That's pretty much how you level up.

Doing quests for rare materials, mining, forging, enchanting (takes a leaf out of WoW) etc will also progress your character.

The beta didn't really show what this underlying huge story is suppose to be, and that it suppose to be it's saving grace.

Maybe the game will open up more when there's more than 3 ppl in the cities at one time. I'll give it a shot since I love MH so much and in some respects it's quite similar.

The story in FFXI was fantastic and I am hoping that the story in FFXIV will be too. The only problem was the grind and the mandatory grouping. I wish I had 4 friends who wanted to play so we could organise like 1-2 hours a day of play to see all the story the game has to offer.

Luckily most quests scale in FFXIV. You can pick group size from solo to raid for any guildleve quests. Not sure about the story quests though.

I can feel that MMO itch starting again. Every year or so I need to jump into a new MMO, even if it's for a month (by which time I usually lose interest). If there are enough aussies playing, or PALGN'ers, I might pick this up. I'm eagerly awaiting some beta impressions icon_smile.gif
