E3 2010: Portal 2 confirmed for PlayStation 3

PC News | It's been a long time!
One of the biggest bits of news to come out of today's Sony conference at E3 is the announcement that Portal 2 will be coming to the PlayStation 3 as well as the already announced Mac, Xbox 360 and PC iterations of the title.

"When the PlayStation 3 was introduced, I was the one of the platform's biggest critics," said Gabe Newell, President and Co-Founder of Valve. "However, Sony Computer Entertainment has proved that the PlayStation 3 is the most open platform of all the current generation consoles and has worked extremely hard to make the platform the most desirable for consumers and developers. As such, we are delighted to announce Portal 2 for the PlayStation 3 and believe the Steamworks support included will make it the best console version of the game," stated Newell.

For those not in the know, the Steamworks application is Valve's proprietary software suite which allows gamers to track their play trends, interact with the community, as well as delivering auto-updates to titles and packaging downloadable content. Newell has confirmed that it will not enable cross-platform play between the PC and PS3.

Portal 2 is scheduled to release sometime in 2011. You can check out the first trailer of the title below.

I'm kinda surprised that this was considered to be so major given that it's on every other platform short of the Wii. At least PS3'ers won't miss out though.

It's major because the PS3 was a second tier platform for valve until now.

Because Gabe Newell has had nothing but contempt for the PS3 until now, they even got EA to port The Orange Box rather than have to work on PS3 devkits. Everyone had already accepted that it wouldn't be released on PS3 so it is a big deal for Gabe to come out and say he is now happy with it.

Good news for PS3 owners.

But, even so, it was funny that Gabe still specified this would be the best version...for consoles.

Its probably the lead console SKU, but it wont be the lead SKU version of the game. PC first, as always.

Is there really any question as to whether or not the PC version of Portal 2 will be the best. Especially when we consider that Valve is a PC developer and perhaps (through Steam) the developer responsible for the revival (or survival) of PC gaming.
I don't think Gabe needed to avoid biting anyone's hand, that the PC release for a Valve game simply goes without saying.

If Gabe said that the PS3 version was the absolute best version there would have been a huge uproar and backlash from the PC community, "goes without saying" or not. I would expect petitions, boycotts, ironic Steam groups, top 10 lists and more! =P
