APB not being released in Australia

PC News | Get ready to import.
These days, when gamers see a release date they all but expect a delay, but in the case of Realtime Worlds' APB, Kotaku Australia have reported that the game just won't be seeing a release down under.

While Realtime Worlds are handling development and publishing of the game, Electronic Arts are handling the product distribution of boxed copies. Earlier today, Electronic Arts contacted Kotaku to say that they would not be distributing the game here.

According to Realtime Worlds, due to the shooting-based nature of APB's gameplay, the game will require local servers to be playable. Seeing as they have no intentions of hosting servers in Australia, that means that they will be completely skipping an Australian release. The only option that Aussies looking to play APB will have is to import, set up an account using an American credit card and play on American servers, risking massive ping times.

I had no intention of buying this, so my opinion probably isn't entirely valid. But just on the principle of it, this is ridiculous.

Well the cost of running MMO servers in Australia is at least ten times what they can do it for elsewhere, and for such a small population, it's hardly a sound investment. What MMO's do have Aussie servers?

As they said, it's shooting based, and unless a server is close-by, you'll just be raging the whole time about lag.

We're neglected as a gaming nation yet again.

Makes sense, in all likelihood I would have played for 2-3 months then dropped it even though it looked pretty cool. Smart business decision but very unfortunate, hopefully not a sign of things to come.

Little bit bummed about this because APB had piqued my curiosity. That said, I hope that this kind of shafting doesn't become an everyday thing for Aussie gamers. icon_sad.gif

Ironically I was sent a key for the open beta today from RPS. Ah well.
