Red Faction: Armageddon announced

PC News | Dale dug a hole!
We hope you guys and gals like breaking stuff, because THQ has today officially announced Red Faction: Armageddon by press release.

Taking place around fifty years after the Red Faction resistance freed themselves from their tyrannical Mars oppressors, Red Faction: Armageddon sees survivors fleeing to the underground caverns and mines of Mars after the surface becomes uninhabitable. While there, Darius Mason, the grandson of survivors from the first revolution, digs into the planet and releases a long dormant evil. With armageddon unleashed, survivors are forced to fight their way to the core, traversing through magma and ice caverns, to defeat an unspeakable threat.

It is not known what new gameplay features will be added to Red Faction: Armageddon, but the press release does mention a new weapon titled the 'Magnet Gun', as well as 'reconstruction technology'.

Currently slated for a March 2011 release on PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3, you can look forward to hearing more about the game at E3 2010.

Underground? Monsters? Really?

The best things about Guerrilla was destroying buildings and smashing through walls to kill the govt forces on the other side, but this looks like it's moving away from that =(

I was actually hoping they might make a return to the first person perspective and the 'excavation' mechanics of the original games, which I thought were awesome. And the monsters just look like a Dead Space rip-off.

Hey guys, I added a trailer and some screenshots I missed. My bad!

I'm remaining very sceptical about this. Guerilla was a huge let down and this new direction looks dodgy to say the least.

Looks like a mashup of the first game and Guerrilla which could turn out great, the new nano forge creation thingy looks interesting too.

Yeah this looks great, I heard...
That they want to mix the Old Redfaction and The new one ( Guerrilla ) Together, So it will be adventure but it also will be a hallway FPS with a stronger story and less flimsy missions.

This could actually be some amazing

Please ignore this post. I probably should have watched the trailer first. This has potential.

I get a Red Faction + Dead Space vibe from the trailer.

Interesting comparison, except Dead Space is in a completely different league in terms of quality. I still rate the first two Red Factions as some of my favourite FPS games, so I'd love to see this succeed.

Seriously though, Guerrilla was one of the most boring games I've ever played. It basically went like this;

"Woah these physics are hella good! Look at how that building collapses!"

An hour later.

"Yawn."

It did kinda lose its appeal by the end of the campaign, taking down helicopters and bridges was great fun though. It succeeded as an open world game but was held back by (IMO) the driving, the story and the variety. Had some great technology which will hopefully make for a great time underground in this one. I think the 'reconstruction technology' will be important factor in how this fares, kinda like Shaun White Skateboarding. If both games use their creating tech well they will have a purchase from me.

As I was saying to Denny when I watched this in GTTV, It's not pulling me in from the trailer.

It looks like a mashup of Dead Space (Red Space?) and Gears of War, with links back to the first game.

I loved Guerilla. The open environments and destruction mechanics were sublime. I also enjoyed Red Faction 1, the geomod integration was way ahead of it's time, and I spent hours in the tech demo glass house area, with infinite ammo, just setting charges and shooting rockets to make man-sized ant mines through the floor and walls.

Underground environments fighting monsters in 3rd person remind me more than anything of Gears of War, which doesn't leave the best impressions as that was a bland experience in an unappealing environment.

The addition of monsters/mutants to a series where the protagonist has spent most of the time fighting people is not instilling a lot of excitement due to let downs in the past such as the later parts of FarCry, Crysis and Crackdown.

If this is in first person ala the original game, my excitedness might go up a notch, but I just want new ground to explore and more massive structures to destroy.

I'm happy that it's not in the same world map as Guerilla, as there's nothing worse than free roaming titles that reuse the same (slightly modified) game world as previous games in the series (looking at you GTA X City Stories, Saints Row 2, Crackdown 2), exploring is half the fun in open world titles.
