Portal for free and Steam Mac live

PC News | The download is not a lie.
In an age of digital rights management, unlock keys, high priced DLC and install limits, its always refreshing when a developer throws us lowly gamers a bone, and those crazy folk at Valve are doing just that.

For a limited time only, up until 24 May 2010 to be precise, Valve are offering up a completely free download of their critically acclaimed puzzle title Portal. Download now, free forever.

That's right. It's completely free. Originally released as part of The Orange Box package alongside all three Half-Life 2 titles, as well as Team Fortress 2, all you need to do now is install a copy of Steam, Valve's distribution service, and click the big red button on their website. Its that easy.

With a Metacritic rating of 90 and a number of awards on its belt, Portal is more than worth your time. If by the end you hunger for more, then with Portal 2 announced and ready to be shown at E3 2010, there will be plenty more portal fun later in the year.

"Woe! I own a Mac!", we hear you cry. Well wipe those tears away, because Steam for Mac has gone live, with the free Portal promotion one of its premiering titles. Remember, all titles purchased on a Windows PC version of Steam will transfer over to a Mac-based Steam account for free, so don't be afraid to make the switch.

For those who have been living under a rock, here's a delightful free Portal and Steam Mac trailer to wet your tastebuds.

And, just like that, Valve creates the best deal of all time. I thought the 99c Half-Life sale would have held that record for a while longer.

EVERYONE GO AND DOWNLOAD THIS!

Shame on those who haven't got the game yet!

My eyes couldn't believe themselves when I saw this.

For some reason the download size of Portal for Mac is huge. Me no like!

I downloaded this in the morning at 7:20AM and it finished downloading at 7:55AM for 2.3GB files.

Is this game permanent? Because if it isn't then it is a waste of space on my HDD. It didn't come up on my news feed saying that I own Portal either....

I almost accidentally ran through the entire game with the developer commentary on.

Got up to chamber 19 and thought "Crap, I only intended on playing the first few" >_>

No reason not to. Screw it, go and buy The Orange Box. Required purchase for all PC/Mac gamers now.

Yes. As long as you download the free version to your Steam account between now and the cut-off date you will forever have it free.

Holy awesome shit. The orange Box is worth the full price purchase for this game alone. For Portal to be free... seriously, if you have not yet played portal, you CAN NOT miss this opportunity. CAN NOT. Get steam just for this one game, and never use steam again for all it matters, just take advantage of this offer.

I just installed steam last night. Yes, I am late to the party. But when I went to download Portal it said it was 5GB. Steam said that Portal includes the Source SDK and other things. If I bite the bullet and download Portal does that mean I don't have to download the Source SDK again (aside from updates) with future Source games?

I'm not sure about the SDK, but just about all Source games use some of the same files, so if you buy another Source games you will have a lot less to download.

Thanks for answering my question. That is what I expected but I didn't want to find out the hard way that my expectations were wrong.

Some servers (like 3FL) are on peering, depending on your ISP, so you can usally get non-counted downloads through steam if you set your server preferences, and use a program like steamwatch.
