Steam Comes to Mac

PC News | Steamed Apple?
Valve has announced that the Steam platform, plus all their Source engine titles would make their way to Apple's Mac OSX system. The announcement was made shortly after a number of Apple themed teaser images were released by Valve last week. Valve yesterday had also announced that Portal 2 would be simultaneously released for Mac as well as PC.

Valve has also announced today that their back catalogue of games would also be updated and released for sale on Mac. All Source engine titles, including Counter Strike Source, Half Life 2 + Episodic Content, Team Fortress, Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2 will be available. One key feature of this cross-platform capability titled Steam Play, would be that license keys would be usable between the two platforms, allowing for Steam titles already purchased for the PC to be playable on Mac without additional charge.

All this will combine with another announced feature, Steam Cloud, which will allow players to transfer specific game and level information between systems. Essentially, a player could play halfway through a level on one PC/Mac system, and would be able to continue onward from that same point on a different system.

Recent changes in the Source engine have allowed for Valve to develop all their titles natively for Mac, the inclusion of Webkit into Steam plus the change to OpenGL will allow for Valve to develop all future titles simultaneously for Windows & Mac systems, the first of these titles being Portal 2, which has a slated release for October this year.

Both systems will be fully compatible online, allowing for matches involving PC & Mac OSX based players. Valve have also enabled this capability for other third party developers to take advantage of, so a number of third party Steam titles could very well make their way to Mac OSX by year’s end.

Valve has stated that Steam will be released online for Mac OSX users to download in April.

Amazing news. Especially the 'Steam Play'. I'm curious to see if the direction of Mac gaming will be pushed even more so by future devs.

Valve you guys are amazing!!

The Steam Play (multi-platform license) feature is fantastic and how about Steam Cloud where you can continue your game from one system to another no matter what OS! Just brilliant icon_smile.gif

Steam cloud is very old news, but are you saying Neo it will be released alongside Portal 2 and Steam for MAC?

I still don't get it?

On Steam Cloud: Im more curious to see when true cloud gaming systems like OnLive take form... abiet not here until we get some decent bandwidth (and do away with download limits)

Steam Mac: Good idea, but it begs the question how many other developers will embrace the Mac too

Do Peggle and Puzzle Quest support Mac? So far I've only heard about Source games being cross-platform.

Just about all of Popcaps games are on the Mac, I'm not sure about Puzzle Quest, and so is Puzzle Quest. You really think the only Mac games are Source games? Which aren't even out yet.

I wonder if Steam Play will also allow Mac users to enter their game CD Keys into Steam and then play on PC? If Steam currently covers any Mac games that is.

This could not be more perfect. I bought the Half Life Complete Pack for PC a few months ago, never quite got through it then went over to the Mac side. Now I can pick it back up and run it natively in OSX, at no extra cost! Awesome!

this is just awesome, if there were more game developers bringing there games to mac i would go with an apple over a pc these days.

As far as I know its just source games for now - but i can't imagine Puzzle Quest and other games not getting Mac Support. Puzzle Quest is already out for the mac and all they would really have to do would be upload the files... getting puzzle quest to work cross platform would be a different story all together though.

I've had quite a number of games like DEFON, Plants v Zombies, Peggle and The Sims (girlfriend's Mac) for a long while now.

No doubt these will be on Steam for sale come release.

Without getting too technical, the key for having Source games run on OSX was the changeover from DirectX to OpenGL, which I'd imagine more and more developers are considering due to the fact that it is an easier, cheaper and far more versatile than DirectX.
The downside being that a lot of specific rendering functions simply do not exist in OpenGL and it really needs to be set up so that it'll run games. So on that front DirectX is a lot easier to pick up and develop with.

I remember back in the day when I used to always use OpenGL for my gaming and tended to shy away from the DirectX option. I guess we are leaning towards that goal again.

No, but I was referring to the games talked about in relation to the Steam Mac release. If Popcap and Puzzle Quest already run on the Mac though, I'm sure they'll get them up and available on Mac's Steam ASAP.

The other downside is that OpenGL doesn't port nicely to the Xbox 360 like DirectX does.

Afaik, ID's engines have always run on OpenGL, and I've always had a preference to them too.

In fact I've never had any issues with any OpenGL games on PC, they've all performed well and looked good.

No idea. What does it stand for? While we're at it, what does it stand for in DirectX? =P

Trick question!

If they've ported Source to OpenGL, Linux wouldn't be too much more work. Of course whether or not it's economically viable is another issue. Linux users tend to be open source and free (as in beer) software advocates.

As for the PS3. You want to run Steam on that? Why?
The games are already able to be ported (albeit not the best), but Sony would never allow Steam to encroach on their own PSN.
