Konami ditches Six Days in Fallujah

PC News | Company cuts controversial shooter loose.
While only being announced a fortnight ago, Konami has quickly canned the controversial Iraq shooter Six Days in Fallujah due to an outpouring of negative press. The title was intended to be a realistic portrayal of the bloody battle between insurgents and US forces in Fallujah in 2004.

The negative backlash came from families of fallen soldiers, retired veterans and citizens' groups in both the United States and Europe, who criticised the title, branding it as insensitive and in poor taste towards those that served in the conflict.

Konami's PR people were quick to share their side of the story, stating: "After seeing the reaction to the videogame in the United States and hearing opinions sent through phone calls and e-mail, we decided several days ago not to sell it. We had intended to convey the reality of the battles to players so that they could feel what it was like to be there."

There is no word on whether Atomic Games' realistic shooter will be saved from the scrap heap by another publisher, but judging by the amount of negative press surrounding the story, it's probably safe to say that this game will most likely never see the light of day.

It's nice of Konami to respect the wishes of those connected to the actual conflict.

Perhaps this will be released in 50 years time as Call of Duty #82..

Can't say I'm surprised about this. I've seen some people get pretty emotional about this on gaming forums, it was always going to be controversial.

How is it different to any other war game? Like all these games based on WWII? Is it just too soon? Time heals all wounds?

Kind of a shame, but I can see why they would ditch it.

Way to buckle under pressure dudes, good job!

This sucks, this game had a lot of potential, and not just to be a good game, but if they pulled this off it could potentialy elevate games as a medium and force them to be taken more seriously.

The irony is that if it was released today with that name it probably wouldn't have got anywhere near the negative press that it has.

+ 1 to spanca

Call of duty is exactly the same except they cover it up,

Some arab country with terrorists in modern day ( i wonder who that could be aiming at? ( lol aiming ))

Same crap different title
Just like fallout had to change drug names
CoD4 was non-specific, whereas this was advertised as a game based on a real-life event from the get-go. Yeah, same sort of deal, but I really think they screwed up by banging on about how 'real' it was supposed to be.

Retarded. This game actually looked like it was going to do something good for the industry and for the brutality of war, but no, we don't get to experience a REAL war game we have to make do with magical healing in Wars that supposedly really happened.

How is this worse than running around World War II with magical healing powers? Surely that is more disrespectful, oh wait, time heals all wounds. Wonder if it's time to bust out the Steve Irwin jokes yet.

A little negetivity and they close the game down? Well done. I honestly don't see how this is an issue. We **** the hell out of WW2 games, of which the quality is severely lacking, and a game that shows a little potential is put on hold because people don't agree? We can have games showing us shooting the living **** out of people from 60 odd years ago, but not a recent war? The americans probably don't want to advertise the torture and fact they can't win without another big boom. Too bad, I love big booms, probably the only decent part of COD4.

Ke-rist. Quick! Let's make a TV movie of the week about it? But a game? **** that right up the ass.

Maybe in 50 years when most of us are dead they'll revamp it for the next-generation... its like WW1/2; why isnt that considered "insensitive"? Its the same deal... bit stupid if you ask me.

you think they wouldv'e included the minigame where you take pics of prisoners stacked on top of each other?

*sigh*
The Americans advertise freedom of action and speech, yet isn't it ironic how they as a collective whole actually oppose this notion?

They let controversial issues such as gun laws pass by, while anything that goes against their beliefs, they shun.

Pretty disappointed about this, but it's understandable.

No really no, the stigma is appalling.

US & Brits killing Nazis oh hey that's fine because we're not specifically aiming at Germans but "Nazis".
US & Britain killing generic Terrorists, that's also fine because we're not specifically saying Arab or Muslim but "terrorist".
US & Britain killing specific enemy in specific area of battle, you insensitive ***** how dare you dishonour those who have fallen and those who continue to fight with such tripe!

It's as Spanca said, instead of 6 days in Fallujah if it was 6 days in Call of Duty the beat up would be minimal because it would be deemed "generic" if instead of Iraq it was 1940 Prague or a generic Arab town looking very Arab filled with Arab looking people, no one would give a toss because it'd be "generic" yet as soon as some realism is attempted, as soon as some correlations are drawn it's sickening how the moral walls immediately rise up and everything which is considered "free" and "protected" is suddenly off limits.

Can't have it both ways, either the industry is mature enough to handle current events or it's entirely insignificant to printed media, TV and Screen who convey current events willy nilly.

Truth be told I wonder what would have happened if instead of using the military Konami went with the Columbine shoot up. "We'll you seem to have no problem with movies and games on your criminals ala Texas Chainsaw Massacre, so what's your boggle now?"

Funny how there is no problem saying that we will be gunning down Russians and Chinese en masse over oil in the near future.
I wonder what the story would have been if this game was a film tie in.

Not that I don’t agree with your point in theory, but Texas Chainsaw Massacre based on a real criminal? That’s a stretch to say the least.

Well Leatherface is really a collection of what a few serial killers did in real life....he's more a montage of a few of them, and ed gein did wear faces around and hang out with corpses a lot....
I don't think we'll be seeing the ted bundy game anytime soon, with any luck

Benza: As Chimp mentioned, Leatherface is loosely inspired by a handful of criminals/crimes that took place.

I'm still waiting on my game where I can fight the Infidels invading my country though icon_sad.gif

pussies, stand bu your decision, who cares what the media thinks ! if the soldiers who fought there are happy with it, then thats all that matters

This sucks the game was looking O.K, but a little negative feed from the press and it gets pulled.

He's a verry verry loose interpretation of Ed Gein, and by loose interpretation it's basicly "Hey that dude wore masks made out of human skins, what if we gave him a chainsaw and had him chase around teens in the middle of butt **** nowhere?"

Gein was from Wisconsin and was only ever convicted of one murder, most of the skins he got were from grave robbing.

Also holy ****, looking up Leatherface on wiki to make sure I had my facts straight I found out about Texas Chainsaw Massacare: The Next Generation were Leather face appears as
Quote
not as a cannibal but as a pizza-eating transvestite involved in an Illuminati conspiracy to provide society a source of horror,
I **** need to see this.

Eh as with most things you take a story and elaborate a bit (a lot) but the reason why I brought that particular instance up was that it was basically an excuse for carnage in the US using some premise of fact to validate it. I highly doubt the game would have used the names of servicemen who participated in the actual skirmish making the waters murky enough where you could say "it was GI Joe minus the ninja fighting Cobra in Iraq!" and it'd be believable if at the start you uttered the catch phrase.

They're fine with TCM despite the connotations that they made a cult hero over a murderer because the waters are murky enough to hide behind, they had a specified location in which it occurred and they added a chainsaw to add to the gore factor.

This was deemed ok for one medium, criticised and slammed for another and people are saying it's understandable and alright to have this double standard in practice.

Sure you wouldn't have it in a high population area (hence Texas with huge... tracks of land), but then again warzones generally aren't highly populated by civilians during the conflict either.
