ProMode #2

PC Feature | Fragging and tagging the Modern way.
Welcome back to another episode of ProMode. On our first episode, we went into a bit more detail regarding the classic Quake 3: Arena and showed you all how brutally skillful some players can be. But now that we've seen cyborgs designed for lightspeed reflex and gameplay, let's slow it down to some more 'Modern' speed, shall we?

We promised you last episode that we'd delve into the Call of Duty series for competitive gaming and skill, and we certainly haven't broken that promise. Through some of the feedback we received, it looks like the game we'll be focusing on is none other than Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, arguably the most popular of the series.

ProFocus: Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

CoD4 has been around for about a year and a half now, and even today is still played by millions around the globe. The multiplayer aspect was praised for its deep leveling and 'perks' system, which allows for everyone to have their own preferred style of play. If you're a gung-ho maniac that likes to run and gun, the SMGs and Hip Firing perks were perfect for you. The diversity of the system allowed players to play how they wanted, which we think is one of the reasons why CoD4 is so popular.

The competitive scene with CoD4 is strong and growing, with Europe in particular taking a strong interest in it - it's listed as one of the games for EuroCup XIX, OpenCup, and NationCup. Though there haven't been many notable players to come out of the scene due to its infancy, there have been some that stood out, namely Stevy "Stevy" Verheyen, known as the CoD4 "Lone Lion" due to him doing a lot of pretty impressive lone stunts in Team matches. But we think that's enough talk; let's get to the fragging, because they speak a whole lot more than our words ever could.

ProSkill

This episode, we've got the usual: three frag videos for you to salivate over. Though they lack the speed of Quake 3, they make up for it in the absolutely ridiculous no-scope headshots and flick shots. The three videos on show are "Violet", "Cereal Killers 1.0", and "Stevy - 9Lives".

Violet
'Violet' is a video with some top-class editing and brutal frags. Showcasing some well known European pubbers, the video consists of many long range shots, and double headshots with one bullet. A short but sweet piece of work. But we warn you, the editing is not for the weak-minded!

Ridiculous shots? Definitely. Your brain's melted from the frenetic editing style? Possibly. Either way, we're pretty sure something in that video wowed you. If you'd like a higher res version of 'Violet', look no further than here! Now onto our next bowl of frags, with a whole lot of cereal to boot.

Cereal Killers 1.0

Okay, so 'Violet' had some pretty crazy editing, but you haven't even seen the half of it. 'Cereal Killers 1.0' takes weird to a whole new level, with the intro literally having a 3D bowl of cereal appear. There's even a fake commercial later on! But aside from all the whacky features, it's filled with some ridiculous frags, which will make you question the integrity of it all. But they're all legit, so prepare to have your jaw drop.

We suddenly feel the need to eat a bowl of cereal, then promptly kill people in CoD4. Just maybe then we'd be as good as the guys in that video. If you'd like a higher res version of 'Cereal Killers 1.0', then head on over to Game.on.net and grab it for yourself. It's an Australian site too, so high download speeds ahoy! And now to wrap up the trio with our favourite.

Stevy - 9Lives

The Lone Lion Stevy Verheyen is apparently so good at this game that he has his own frag video. Featuring some slick editing coupled with jaw-dropping sniping skill, '9lives' is easily our favourite video and is a testament to how skilled this guy actually is. You'll see what we mean.

Yes, he got him in the head. Without a scope too. We're just as shocked as you are. If you'd like a high res version of "9lives", then download away at super fast speeds from the trusty games.on.net.

So, now that you've seen what the high-tier players can do, some of you may be wondering how you can be like that as well. Well, CoD4 isn't all that hard to find considering it's so popular, so if you don't already have it, you can pick it up right away and begin practicing.

L2Play

We're not going to lie to you; CoD4 is hard to find tips for, due to its incredibly diverse multiplayer. That being said though, we've dug up some pretty nice tips that will help you be a more efficient player in tactics. So, no learning any cool tricks, just learning how to be more tactical.

From what we've gathered and seen, many high-tier players play very passively rather than with all out aggression. Notice how Stevy never really attacks people but more lets them come to him? That's what you need to learn. The mental game of an FPS is very important and separates the decent players from the great. If you learn to play your opponent into your hands, rather than just all out attack them, then you could very easily dominate and annihilate. Be mindful of your actions and of your opponents. Play smart rather than just aggressive. This is what makes a good player and it's what makes some of the professionals so damned insane. Sure, there's the accuracy and precision to take into account, but if you play smart with your opponent and have him chasing you, he's going to have to earn that clear shot.

And that concludes the second episode of ProMode. We hope you enjoyed watching the insanity that is CoD4, and look forward to seeing your comments. Next episode, we'll be turning the speed back on with the Unreal Tournament series, but which of the UT games it will be is for us to know, and you to find out. Until next time, ProMode out.

Loved the videos, nice finds, really wants me to get back into CoD4 again. I was really good once apon a time topping most games (pub HC of course, never got into clans too much).

Just a question, are those videos all on Xbox360? Don't remember it looking as swish on my comp despite running on all high settings.

Man not a fan of the hyper editing style on those videos, for the first two I could tell what the **** was going on in a lot of it.

I know it would probbably be a hard ask since they lacked online, but man I'd love to see one of these articles on Goldeneye or Perfect Dark.

They'd all be on PC. That kind of accuracy and flick shots is almost impossible on a controller.

Great article Denny. You're really giving this feature series hands and feet. I agree that a retro article for titles such as GoldenEye, Perfect Dark and even Timesplitters would be a potentially fun read.

I'd really love to see one based on Battlefield 2 which is also one of my faves!

My god! How on Earth did that Stevy bloke pull that off?

I've always believed that no-scopes like that are generally luck more than skill.

But this bloke has skill in barrel fulls. They all looked legit, but he was simply fast.

Interesting that they let the opposition come to him, I've always been one for the "kamikaze" attitude towards it.
You don't get points for not dying in a Free For All or Team Deathmatch, so I tend to go a bit mental.

All content is PC. The reason it looks a bit prettier and smoother in motion is due to post processing from the video editing. Motion blur in particular is a very common technique used in frag vids.

I'll look into the retro games. You're right in saying it would be difficult content to find, however once I have my net back up at home I'll see if I can dig up any old school stuff.

Thanks for the kind comments icon_smile.gif

BF2 is definitely a game with a solid amount of content behind. I do intend on looking into it at some point. There's some hilarious machinima from Battlefield 2 as well, which IMO is a must!

Everyone is different in terms of tactics. Back in my competitive UT2004 days I was one of the most aggressive players, but sometimes I had to relax a little and use that aggression passively and let the opponent drag himself into my shots.

That's essentially how one predicts an opponent in a game with a projectile shot like a rocket in Quake or so: you track your opponent and either predict where he's heading through map knowledge and keeping your ears peeled for powerup pickups, or have him/her chase you, pretty much giving you an open level of prediction because you're manipulating them. As gungho as some FPS games like CoD4 are, it's pretty amazing how much of a mental game there is behind it all too.

Cheers for the feedback, suggestions and comments guys. Keep them coming as I do take it all into account!

Well if we think about FPS scoring wholistically, your KD ratio is moreso taken into account rather than the number of kills, say you get 89 kills but 74 deaths, awesome but I think to see someone with a score of 50 -5 is more impressive, assuming they didn't camp excessively.

Ya know I'd love to see you do an article on Speed Running, it's kinda like the golf to a team deathmatches football.

To me, COD4 takes no skill, thats why I mainly use it to muck around with friends. It is so easy to get kills, most weapons are just ridiculously overpowered, some taking only 2-3 shots to kill. As for No-Scoping, once you know how to abuse the glitch in the engine its easy as hell.

When will we be seeing a UT or TF2 ProMode? Me want.

Guaranteeing there'll be some speed run articles. Absolutely love watching the speed runs and I'll also be looking into the trick jumping scene.

The thing with CoD4 is that its built around pleasing the mainstream more than the hardcore. There is some form of skill in it but you don't require such pinpoint precision like in a lot of other games. There are a lot of impressive shots and such in CoD but when you play the game you can kind of understand how it's fairly possible. Personally I'm not the biggest fan of CoD4, but it's fun and does the job pretty well as a competitive game. Quake on the other hand...icon_eek.gif

ProMode 3 is UT, TF2 I'm looking into.
