EA to revive Syndicate?

PC Rumour | Rumour does the rounds again.
Over the past couple of days, rumours have been swirling that Electronic Arts may be reviving Bullfrog's classic cyberpunk title Syndicate.

The report from GameIndustry.biz states that sources have confirmed that game developer Starbreeze (the team behind The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay and The Darkness) have been tasked with bringing the project to life - and have apparently been working on the game since August 2007 under the guise of Project Redlime.

If the report is to believed, this new Syndicate title will see a release across the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 platforms.

To date EA has not issued a statement to either confirm or deny the rumour.

All I can think is...

"Please don't ruin my childhood. Please don't ruin my childhood. Please don't ruin my childhood."

I have very fond memories of those games. Please don't destroy the goodwill you've built up with me, EA!

Hmm, I've never played a Syndicate game, I know, it's shameful! However this may well prompt me to go back and track down a copy.

No.2 looks more futuristic
Ill give a run down for newbies

Cyberpunkish Future
You have a squad of people, and you research various upgrades armour/weapons , and you implemnt chips , and other metalic things into your teammates.

You go around killing people and getting money, good thing was that it wasnt 100% linear ( robbing banks anyone? )

You could even brain wash people to follow u and make them pick up guns and fight ( i rmbr getting like 200 people into a cab "bigD" )

If Riddick or The Darkness are anything to go by, this is going to be one of the worst games ever.

I hate you EA, with so much passion it's not funny. You are ruining all our childhoods.

Loved Syndicate on the Amiga 500 back in the day.

If they can do a new Syndicate like a cyberpunk GTA without the overlong cutscenes and repetitive gameplay, I'd be very chuffed.

^yeah syndicate on the 500 was great back in the day. and i remember playing it with four players on the ps1 years ago too.

Oh god please not another FPS/3PS franchise crapfest like shadowrun, I really hope they keep the original gameplay.

Nice, always thought this was due for a revival.

i was always surprised this series died out.

i mean, maybe we were weird, but pretty much everyone i knew with a PC at the time had Syndicate, and Syndicate Wars, so they always felt pretty popular, and then nothing?

(i suppose Bullfrog disappearing had a lot to do with that?)

A sequel to Syndicate is something I've been hoping for a long, long time.

I hope they don't can the research side of things to make it more mainstream. I envision it being fleshed out a lot more. Perhaps a Risk style campaign with ongoing research, robberies, assassinations and persuasion of populations. You'd need to maintain the tactical squad based excursions of course. And the destruction of 3D buildings and terrain (from Syndicate Wars), that was just pure awesome. More big mecha spiders are all good too icon_wink.gif

Knowing the trends lately, it'll get made into an FPS with little to no over-arching strategy just so that it will appeal to the unwashed console masses =\

RIP Bullfrog, we still miss you.

So long as they take the foundation of Syndicate Wars (very early terrain deformation FTW!) and keep the singleplayer squad based gameplay, without turning it into another 'rogue agent against the world' style shooter, then it'll be on my radar. Starbreeze is a good sign! This only being a rumor though? Not so good.

Confirmation PLZ!

Well the response seems good so the rumor looks healthly.

I honestly dont know how they could remake this and please everyone, :/ tho im hoping for the best.

The one thing that does worry me a bit about this rumour is the suggestion of a console version. Now I certainly do enjoy console gaming, no mistaking that. But Syndicate was a style of strategy game that only reasonably lent itself to the PC. Console versions back in the day were ports trying to mimic the PC version. A simultaneous release would more likely mean certain "compromises" in the design.

It was only yesterday though that I was wondering if a Synidcate game could work on a console by having left analogue control movement, and right analogue control direction of fire. Meanwhile the PC version keeps the original point and click.
