PC News | Prepare yourself for war.
THQ has announced that the multiplayer beta for the forthcoming RTS title Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II will be dropping later this month.

The beta will be hosted via Valve's digital distribution platform Steam and will be open to gamers on January 28. For those lucky devils that happen to own a copy of the Dawn of War expansion Dawn of War - Soulstorm, they will be able to gain access to the beta from January 21.

The beta promises to give players access to all four of the game's races over five multiplayer maps, and will feature the functionality of Games for Windows - LIVE TrueSkill Matchmaking.

The game's system requirements have also been revealed, giving gamers the opportunity to fine tweak their systems before release, if required:

Minimum Requirements:
  • Windows XP SP2 or Windows Vista SP1
  • P4 3.2 GHz (single core) or any Dual Core processor
  • 1 GB RAM (XP), 1.5 GB RAM (Vista)
  • A 128MB Video Card (Shader Model 3) - Nvidia GeForce 6600 GT / ATI X1600, or equivalent
  • 5.5 GB of Hard Drive space

I still don't understand how owning Soulstorm will get you access. Is there a special code you have to enter somewhere or something?

Ergh, I was really anticipating this beta but then they go and tie it in with STEAM. Pass.

When has Steam ever been a bad thing?

Since always. I've never not had a problem with it. Crashes randomly, gets memory leaks when not connected to the internet, among other resource hogging things. This is across five different machines so it's not simply "user error" it's something wrong with the program.

I'll get this however I despise true skill ranking.

Wow Nikack, I used to run Steam on 4 year old hardware and never ran into any trouble =/ luck of the draw I guess.

I think I just found one more reason to get a new computer.
I hate running my current one. BUt that's cause it's like 8 years old.

Have u tried it recently? It used to be pretty buggy and bad for like the first year or 2 but now I can't fault it except for it's somewhat sketchy 100% complete downloads that aren't 100% complete. I've been using it heaps and other than download percentages being flakey I've not had a problem over the last few years. And resource hog? It's using 0% CPU and 12mb of RAM, if you can't spare that then the problem is that you have a horribly out of date PC. I've also never heard about any other problems from of my friends who also use steam alot.

But back to topic, I wish I could register my retail ver with steam so I could try this, it was looking good when I last saw it icon_smile.gif.
Though I must agree with Nietzsche, skill rankings are pathetic, they never work, I always get matched up with people of stupidly different skill levels such that I either win in 5 minutes or lose in 5 minutes, that's never been fun but back when there wasn't skill matching in games I never had a problem finding evenly matched players to play against.

I hope we see it on the 360 too
