Prince of Persia PC to be DRM free

PC News | Ubisoft wondering "how truthful people actually are."
Shacknews has reported that the PC version of Ubisoft's latest offering of Prince of Persia, would contain no forms of digital rights management. A common tool used in PC gaming, DRM is used to help combat high levels of piracy by restricting the number of times the software can be installed or other similar types of limitations.

Interestingly, a Ubisoft community developer posted on the official forums in regards to the issue of copy protection.

Responding to complaints about previous PC titles and DRM the developer responded, "You're right when you say that when people want to pirate the game they will but DRM is there to make it as difficult as possible for pirates to make copies of our games. A lot of people complain that DRM is what forces people to pirate games but as PoP PC has no DRM we`ll see how truthful people actually are. Not very, I imagine."

Ouch, that's a rather backhanded remark. If/when I buy the game it'll be on 360 for the achievements, maybe if it was Games for Windows LIVE I'd look into it on PC...

No DRM is great, but taking one awesome game and turning it into a casual and sort of kiddy game ruined it for me.

He's got a point though, although of course now idiot gamers will be like "hur, he mad foon uf oos we ninja hiz gaymes no!1!1!!!!!1!!!11!!1".

In fact I would put money down on at least one person posting somewhere" I'm going to Pirate Prince of Persia just to spite that guy". Which basically means the person is a wankstain and had no intention of ever buying a game... ever.

Looks like Ubi is trying to make a point here. It is unfortunate cause none of us will listen and strive to prove them wrong. At the end of the day DRM is here to stay like it or hate it.

I applaud them for the effort, but you have to admit there is going to be piracy either way in this day and age but at least it won't piss everyone off and turn them off buying the actual game.

games with drm = on torrents within 24h
games without drm = on torrents within 24h

i seriously don't see how not having changes anything for people who pirate the game, just those who buy it

Go ubisoft!

Good that they have decided to not use DRM, but bad that one of the developers is almost seeing it as some sort of challenge to make honest PC gamers feel bad if this game sells badly.

No, he's not making honest gamers feel bad, he's making anyone who doesn't buy it, and pirate it instead, feel bad. Which they won't, because they're idiots with less brain cells between them than legs.

Woot! notsofat hit the nail on the head it's about time they realize DRM is pointless. I'm with you Mr Waffle, I will be playing it on 360, just glad people won't be stung with spore issues again.

Haha. It's a totally valid point, I think. Though I think appealing to a software pirate's sense of honour is much like pissing into the wind.

Yep. Ubisoft are being asses. Of course this won't stop piracy, but the point is it won't be pirated any more than normal. The real plus here is that those who buy it legally aren't treated like criminals. From my understandings, it doesn't include any protection whatsoever (no cd check, no cd key).

If Ubisoft find their piracy rates around the same level as their other titles, then them using this to push their DRM is total bulls**t. Having no DRM certainly won't boost piracy, pirates will play with or without DRM, but at least this way you save the $$$ on licencing fees for the DRM solution (eg SecuROM), the development time for implementing it, the $$$ for running activation servers and whatnot, or the $$$ for the support line where you request more activations.

Expecting pirates to turn around and stop pirating - painfully stupid wishful thinking. If something's for free, people will jump at it.
