Fallout 3 changes affect all regions

PC News | In-game drug references changed for Australians, Europeans and Americans alike.
A month ago, Fallout 3 officially passed classification in Australia, after the game had been edited to remove certain real-world drug references. It was assumed that these changes would only affect the Australian version of the game. However, Edge is reporting that Peter Hines, Bethesda vice president of PR and marketing, has stated that all versions of the game will contain the same changes.

Speaking with Edge, Hines said, "We want to make sure folks understand that the Australian version of Fallout 3 is identical to both the UK and North American versions in every way, on every platform." He went on reveal that the game was initially refused classification due to real world drug references in-game, which have subsequently been replaced with fictional names. Rather than have different versions of the game across different territories, the substitution has been made across all versions of the game.

“I didn't want people continuing to assume the version in Australia was some altered version when it's not. There are no references to real world drugs in any version of Fallout 3,” Hines emphatically stated.

so if there was no reference to real world drugs in any version, what was cut?

or does he just mean there will be no RW drug references in any version released?

Basically whatever alterations were made to get the game classified in Australia have been implemented in ALL regions. Not only did the real World names get changed (so no more morphine) but apparantly the positive versus negative effects of drugs have had a little tinkering.

No idea what this will mean to what has actually changed, they're still a bit tight lipped and seeing as there is no basis for comparison there's no reason to come out and say what was affected either.

It's nice to know that Australians don't have to feel like they got an altered version of the game... now EVERYONE can feel like they've got an altered version of the game. Kudos to you Hines, kudos to you.

I honestly think this is a good move on their part. I hate getting altered versions and they, as the developer, have obviously come to the conclusion that making the changes to the game are insignificant enough to the overall game that they did not need to make different versions. While I think it's ridiculous it was censored for such trivial issues I'm glad they've solved the problem this way!

At least now I know I can be fairly sure I can buy the game locally and not be shafted by having a worse version than elsewhere.

I feel shafted as I have pre ordered from Play asia -
The only good thing is I am getting the game ltd edition for $105 incl post - so i am saving $24.95 from the EB RRP - and considering the ltd edition is exclusive to EB and GAME, I wouldnt be getting it at a better orice here ...

I dont understand why people get so wild over this. It's 1 name change. WHO CARES? Its gone from "Morphine" to something else... is that really such a big deal? lol Its almost comical

it's all about the principle dj

but yeah, it's no biggie really

Maybe they realised the game played much better with the tweaks and then decided to change all versions?

You never know.

I'm thinking I should start a petition calling for the resignation of Michael Atkinson.

I was under the impression that's just an example of what the OFLC had an issue with, but neither they nor the developers were willing to talk about more specifics...

G'day, cousins. I'm writing this from England (it is raining).

First, it sucks that it got censored. Second, although what got censored is no big deal, it's the principle. Third, so to appease a tiny percentage of the audience, they (metaphorically, obviously) cripple the experience for the rest of us.

To finish:

Maybe after an independent panel said, this has gone too far, maybe they sat down and went, hmmmm, maybe the thong wearing, beer drinking, bbq guys are right, maybe we did go to far and they had a moral dilema and changed it all. It does seem odd that everyone gets the altered version...
I think the change was so minor that the team decided that it didn't effect the end experience in any real way in order to have to make special cut from a minor market introducing more work and risk for patching etc.

Actually the Americans and the British don't give a damn.In fact they are happy that morphine's name was changed to Med-EX because that's what the drug was called in the first two.

Yeah, I know. My comment was meant to be a bit of a joke. I haven't played the first Fallout or its sequel, but its good that Bethesda is at least keeping the name of the drug from them.
