Fallout 3 to feature over 200 endings!

PC News | You'd better organise your annual leave now.
In the latest Official Xbox Magazine podcast, Bethesda's Todd Howard - executive producer of Fallout 3 - has revealed some interesting factoids about the upcoming title.

The most impressive tidbit being that the original dozen or so planned endings has now ballooned out to a whopping two hundred endings.

Howard explains "…that is not an exaggeration, but it deserves some description. Yeah…200 endings…that's a lie of some kind! So originally when we started there were various iterations of the endings, and the ending is kind of cinematic that's dynamic based on the things you've done. Well there's at least nine maybe twelve [original endings] but we kept adding things to it."

As well as the larger number of endings, the game's length has also grown in size with the original plan for the game to encompass twenty to forty hours of gameplay quickly being eclipsed as it is reportedly almost as large as their previous title Oblivion, with gamers tipped to be easily spending over one hundred hours with the game.

Hm, think of it this way:
The ending is determined by many decisions.
Lets assume the worst and say each decision is black/white, ie you can only do one of two things (though I doubt bethesda are that bad - but hear me out icon_wink.gif ).

Then you have 2^x >= 200... gives x=8, that's roughly 8 major decisions that will affect the ending.

That said, I doubt that there will only be 2 choices in most scenarios - in oblivion there were 3 for many things, so I think we can assume there will be three or four.

That means there will be 4-6 major plot points in the game. (EDIT: From memory, Mass Effect had around 3 or 4).

Hows that for intrepid? icon_wink.gif

I can't wait for this, I haven't played fallout before, but something tells me I will get seriously, seriously, hooked on this game. The idea of spending over 100 hours just makes me seethe with joy icon_smile.gif

And then there's mods...

I <3 Bethesda.

I'm really excited about this. The setting and art direction look fantastic, and the concept of the Vaults is quite interesting as well. I've never played the previous Fallout games as I'm not really a PC gamer but I don't expect that will inhibit my enjoyment, after all I love Oblivion and I hadn't played any of the previous Elder Scrolls titles.

I've got very high expectations for this one, don't know why exactly, but I just have a feeling about it.

I cant believe so many of you have never played fallout before!

I really hope they dont tame it down too much, part of the charm of fallout was the crudeness and dark humor of it all. But with the amount of negative press games are getting the past few years, bethsoft dont really come across as the sort of company to step on toes.

Its definitely looking the part though, just have to wait and see how the story and gameplay turn out like.
