Audiosurf outsells the big guns on Steam

PC News | Riding the wave of success.
In today's mega-developer driven world, it is a very rare sight to see an independent game outshine the safe bets and franchise sequels that are flooding the market.

But like Puzzle Quest, another quirky indie game has managed to burrow its way into our hearts, and in the process become the biggest selling game across Valve's Steam platform.

That accolade alone makes the overnight success of Audiosurf even sweeter, as it has even outsold Valve's heavyweight titles such as Half-Life 2, Portal and Counter-Strike - not to mention hundreds of other premier titles that are available across the digital distribution network, making Audiosurf's creator, Dylan Fitterer an instant success.

"The critics are calling Audiosurf one of the most innovative music games ever released. Sales of the title and the buzz across the Steam Community pages support those claims," said director of business development at Valve, Jason Holtman. "This kind of runaway success for an independent title is a tribute to Dylan's work and millions of informed gamers connecting via Steam each week."

For those of you that have missed the boat, Audiosurf is an addictive puzzle racer hybrid where players can use their own music to create their own individual gaming experience. Depending on the song you choose; the speed, the shape and mood of each ride creates a unique race track for you to play - throw on a slow ballad and you'll be riding the mellow audio waves, but if you load up your favourite rock or dance tune, be prepared for the game's intensity to crank up a notch.

For more on Dylan and the Audiosurf craze, head on over to where it all began to check out some of his other indie wares.

Wow, thats unexpected and rather cool! I would have thought that Audiosurf was a little too niche to get the big sales.

And so it should. Its great that steam allows games like this to come out into the the open and it helps encourage indie games.

Indie games drive innovation.

Ok fine, I'll buy it.

LOL. I guess it's just that everyone talks about it, and it does get a ton of steam advertising. Every time I log in to steam there seems to be an ad for it.

Being only US$9.95 and strong Australian economy was a selling point for me, as well as it being a music related game.

I also got a few of my friends into it.

We need more games like these.

Well it just sold one more copy.

I'll have to download it over night but I'll give it a run tomorrow after Uni.
